Emerging markets fund manager Mark Mobius doesnt think there will be a trade war if Donald Trump is elected president.
Trumps positions on tradeincluding raising tariffs on Chinese imported goodshave raised concerns that we could end up in an all out trade war between the US and China.
Speaking at the SALT Conference in Las Vegas on Friday, Mobius, the executive chairman of Templeton Emerging Market Group, said it wont come to that. He thinks Trump will get deals done.
When people ask me, I say, I dont like what he says, but I like the way he says it, Mobius said.
He continued: [Trumps] a great negotiator. Hes flexible. I dont see any of these things about trade wars coming to pass. I dont see it. I think he will negotiate and get deals done. And I think thats the important thing.

Trump wrote a book. Every leader who isn’t a moron will read his book(s). Trump will have to work to stay a move ahead.
Trump will actually start fighting back in the trade war we are in. This is why Trump will win in a 50 state landslide.
It'll be a 49 state landslide.
He won’t carry Vermont. It’ll be a 49 state landslide.

He won’t carry perma-blue Maryland either.
Nice to hear sage comments from a seasoned and intelligent investor like Mark Mobius for a change rather than the breathless babble from empty headed “experts on everything” that are pushed on us everyday.
Its amazing that Americans hear and believe so much from people who know so little. Yahoo is as left wing as it gets so its surprising to see it report something objective. The editorial screeners must have been sleeping last night.
Any one that tells the public the USA is not in a trade war now and so it theoretically impossible to start a trade war when you are already in a trade war is a liar or ignorant or delusional. Which is it? He is far from an expert he is propagandist.
I agree. Perhaps the threat of tariffs was a warning shot, a negotiating ploy, more than anything else. Ditto the proposal to renegotiate the debt service. Focussing their minds in a way that only a good negotiator can.
We do need to fight back, and there are so many ways to do so. Tariffs should be a last resort, or perhaps a limited one, IMHO.
As to bringing jobs home, I think Trump's tax plan, the reduction in corporate tax, the one-time 10% incentive to bring overseas profits home, combined with the removal of some egregious regulations, will stunt the exodus of jobs, if not bring many of them back home, and unlike tariffs, won't ask the consumer to pay for it.
More tariffs, less income taxes. We do to them what they do to us. That is fair trade.
The THREAT of tariffs gives you the leverage to negotiate.
Will there be inflation? Yes. The good kind of inflation. Otherwise we will fail as a world power as we continue to de industrialize and China ascends. Sorry if you do not want to hear the truth but there it is.

Trump himself has said he would love to have a trade war with China.
Trump want to fight back, this is good.
As if we aint already in a trade war. We are losing.
It’s not that simple. I was in sales for years, read every book on sales that was available, but, I was never worth a damn at it. It wasn’t natural for me. It was a “fish out of water” story for me. Finally left that and became a systems analyst, until retirement.
Saying that, to say this...just reading Trump’s book, even memorizing Trump’s book, will not necessarily change everyone into Trump clones. He has the personality, the talent, and the tenacity to still out-Trump most people.
Since the rise of Obama, millions have read alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals”, but few have been able to turn it around on him.
As pointed out technically a war is when two sides are fighting each other. When one side doesn’t fight then it isn’t a war. I guess we are in a “trade capitulation”.
Therein lies the issue. People like Mobius are only guessing what Trump will do.
“have raised concerns that we could end up in an all out trade war between the US and China. “
We are in one already
