This month, President Obama will become the first incumbent American president to visit the Japanese city of Hiroshima since the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Aug. 6, 1945.
That bomb - and a second atomic blast on Nagasaki on Aug. 9 - effectively ended World War II; Japan surrendered six days after the Hiroshima bombing. However, the human costs were huge. Estimates of those killed go as high as 150,000, and even for those who survived, it was a hellish, life-altering experience.
[Snip]
In the first Gallup poll from 1945 just after the bombings, a huge 85 percent of Americans approved the bombings. However, figures from 2005 show a significant decline to 57 percent. Meanwhile, another poll conducted by the Detroit Free Press in the United States and Japan in 1991 found that 63 percent of Americans thought that the bombings were justified in a bid to end the war, while just 29 percent of Japanese did.

Of course. They didn’t live in that generation. They would also think the mass carpet bombing of Germany was wrong as well.
Bugger them then.
And also those same people would think that retaliation for Pearl Harbor was over reaction.
that’s a fact.
The Battle Of Okinawa killed more than both a-bombs combined.
Whenever I meet a World War II vet, which is growing increasingly rare, I always ask them if they had a problem with President Truman’s decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. I get the same answer every time.
In Japan, and American, more and more people are historially ignorant. IF the US had either blockaded or invaded Japanese dead would have number in the millions. Either as collateral damage when the Japanese Military tried to use them as human shields or from mass starvation and disease.
If the Japanese are so upset about Hiroshima, they can consider it as the justifiable respond to the rape of Nanking and the thousands of other Japanese atrocities before/during World War 2.
That photo is guaranteed to rightfully infuriate our GIs, the Chinese, the Koreans, the Filipinos, etc etc.
As horrific as it was, to have had the bomb in summer 1945 and not to have used it would have been an act of insanity.
Bill Whittle presented what in my mind is by far the best examination of this ever. It’s on YouTube. Somehow I am not finding it at this instant.
Hiroshima & Nagasaki saved at least 5 times as many Japanese lives as they cost.
Sorry, back then we DID think it was right to take out the bastards who bombed Pearl Harbor, killed and maimed our soldiers in captivity, treated missionaries like animals and, in general, weren’t fit to live. The japanese people were fanatics.
Back then we knew the difference between right and wrong. Today’s wimps think the world is all shades of gray. Pun intended.
My Dad was infantry in Europe & his division was readying for combat in the Pacific in August 1945. I’m here because Truman bombed Hiroshima & Nagasaki (remember, the Japs didn’t surrender after the first one).
To HELL with these atomic guilt trips!
The liberals at the Washington Post have always felt it was wrong.. so they push this kind of crap.
Not American patriots. Just gutless cowards, traitors, and other Demonicrat sewer scum.
“They believe this because they have no risk of being the first one off the Higgins boat invading Japan.”
Exactly.
Read a little Japanese history and you’ll wonder why we didn’t drop more bombs on them.
