One area in which Trump can be nailed down is his overall view of trade. As I explained at Conservative Review, when it comes to Trump’s own financial dealings, he is an unrepentant globalist, from which he has made a fortune. But these days, as he runs for president, the billionaire is a radical protectionist who has repeatedly declared his intention to impose massive tariffs aimed at the economies of other countries, such as Japan and Mexico, and a forty-five percent tariff on products from China. Such broad tariffs would most certainly result in retaliation by the targeted countries. This is a sure job-killer that would also drive up costs of everyday products to low- and middle-class Americans. The net result: economic misery, not just for those hard-working, tax-paying Americans who work in industries that rely on international commerce and trade, but mostly everyone.

Look folks, Trump’s tirades about tariffs is solely meant to gain the support of unions and people whose jobs have been shipped overseas...it is not a policy platform, it is vote-getting speech. The guy deals with this stuff globaly, he knows how the system works...he has built an empire knowing how the system works...get over it! Think about why he is using this campaign subject...it’s to garner votes from people who need jobs...it is not a foreign policy position...
Levin says Trump is a unrepentant globalist and then goes own to say that Trump wants to put tariffs on foreign made goods.
Seems a globalist would be against tariffs.

Reagan was all for free trade as long as it benefits Americans and helps us sell our products by opening up foreign markets for our goods. But that’s not what’s happening. We’re being flooded with foreign goods and they’re putting our factories and our people out of work. Trump wants to get a handle on that.

People need to get real that none these deals are actual Free Trade. They’re government-brokered and managed trade deals full of provisions for connected cronies and interest groups.

This is really misleading. Other countries already tariff or exports so this is a play on logic and rhetoric. This is like fighting back after bully punches you a dozen times and you are worried he might retaliate if you begin to punch back. it is illogical.
Can we take up a collection for a straight-jacket for Levin?

I agree completely. Our entire “global trade” policy is based on sending jobs overseas.
That is not how it should work, and that is not what Donald wants. Nor is that good for America.
What we are doing is deindustrializing our very own nation. Big time.
I expect long overdue retaliatory tariffs against countries like China and Japan. If he doesn’t do it then he will lose all political support. It better be real.
Certainly, but strategic trade policy is more Reagan than unrestricted free trade is.
There is no such thing as free trade, never has been, never will be. It’s entirely an imaginary concept, such as a friction-less plane in physics.
All trade is managed. Even trade within the United States is managed. Our problem, for decades is that our trade policies have been mismanaged in favor of other nations.
Levin tries to portray “free-trade’ as a conservative position. It is not!
Levin has turned into a cartoon of himself.
