Metzler told the newspaper that the officer, a nine-year veteran of his department, was shot after a traffic stop initiated by a different police officer. The suspect then got into a fight with the second officer, who reportedly attempted to use a stun gun on the driver.
... The Illinois State Police said later Sunday that Pendleton, who was also believed to be wounded, has additionally been charged with attempted murder of a police officer.
Authorities said Pendleton fled the area in a stolen pickup truck and is armed with an AK-47 assault rifle.
...a trooper responding to a call about the Mahomet officer's shooting struck a van at a Decatur intersection, killing a 26-year-old woman. The trooper had activated his flashing lights and siren.
Authorities hadn't yet released the names of the 53-year-old trooper or the crash victim by Sunday afternoon. Both were taken to a hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead.

NO matter, officer killed is the worst wrong possible, I guess. Anything else may be tolerated to respond to it, even if it has already happened and the danger has passed.

Late 70’s, chasing a robbery suspect, approaching an intersection with my lights and siren running, flashing yellow traffic light for us, flashing red for cross traffic. Criminal zips through the flashing yellow and as I approach the flashing yellow, a car approaching the flashing red light initially slowed down then hit the gas and pulled right out in front of me. Collision.
I was hurt, the putz that pulled out in front of me was uninjured (drunk).
Did I demonstrate due regard?
Point being, the guy that was running should be held liable for all injuries and property damage that results from running.
Moral hazard — creates an excuse-all for police.
I agree, Pendleton should be held responsible for the death of the girl by virtue that the commission of his crime caused the girl’s death. Either second degree murder, or even manslaughter.
There was a second officer, but fortunately neither officer was killed. But, yes, time is of the essence. Tragic yes, but certainly not the fault of the police who was responding.
Certainly? Without knowing anything else?
This is to boost a moral hazard. We can never have the king unable to do wrong.
Especially in that instance. If more comes to light then a different response might be warranted. For all we know the girl had her music loud, or was distracted by some other cause and did not hear the sirens or see the lights, which we do know were in operation.
Pendleton should bear responsibility as well for the commission of his crime played a significant part in the tragedy.
Sanctifying ignorance? This is even worse. Double down on moral hazard.
You have to realize that most of this crime is loners, whereas the government can act as the biggest gang that ever was.
Moral hazards do NOT buy you anything good. Believe me.
Stun guns and other less than lethal methods get cops killed.
Not in the least, sanctifying restraint in passing judgment before facts are known. Knee-jerk reactions are counter-productive for the fault may lie with the girl. Until I know more than I will not invoke moral hazard as the real culprit.
But too often citizens want to blame the police, and I refuse to take that stance until I learn that that stance is indeed called for.

Decatur is 40 miles down the road from Mahomet where the shooting took place about a block or so from the police station.
I suppose the woman running a red light is within the realm of possibility. It’s not the simplest explanation.
I saw photos of a minivan on its roof. The scene of the accident in Decatur was 50 miles from the shooting in Mahomet. Perhaps the Illinois state trooper was trying to get there in 5 minutes.
I have a hard time reconciling these particular details, but more information may one day come to light.
The perp has been upset since he was turned down for a role in “The Hobbit”.
