Violence Against Teachers Raising Concerns Locally, Statewide

A report released this week by the Bureau of Justice Statistics says 6.5 percent of teachers in Minnesota public schools have reported being physically attacked by a student. The report adds that 11.4 percent of Minnesota public school teachers have reported being threatened by a student. This is above the national average of 10 percent. The Bureau of Justice numbers are from the 2011-2012 school year, during a 12-month reporting period. Mary Broderick is the President of the St. Cloud Education Association, she says violence against teachers is creating concern at local school districts and statewide. “We really feel it’s important to get to the bottom of what’s causing these things to happen. There may be some situations where expulsion or a punishment of that type would be appropriate, but in many cases it’s about a kid that needs more support and resources.” Some state lawmakers are proposing laws that would implement tougher penalties, like immediate expulsion for students who assault their teachers. Other proposals involve adding more security staff to schools. Broderick, however, believes focusing more on behavioral services for students in need should improve teacher safety. “When you come to the idea of teachers being injured, it’s usually not something that a security move would have helped. It’s usually something with a student who really has significant concerns in their own life.” Broderick says the SCEA and District 742 have had “climate meetings” this year that were spurred mostly due to concerns about teacher safety. Both groups are continuing to work to ensure every school in the District has resources to help at-risk kids. “I think we’re making progress but there’s always room for improvement,” Broderick says.

What we need is just for the teachers to keep electing progressives. I’m sure they have some social justice program that will fix this, after all everyone knows this is caused by white privilege.

Of course. Let's let the little darlings know that the only consequence for battering or threatening an adult is a warm and cozy chat with a Counselor. Maybe the kiddies could get some milk and cookies too?

Got in Himmel!

I’ve heard that a teacher or school worker is not allowed to physically touch a student, otherwise be charged with assault themselves.

is this true?

If a kid is out of control or threatening others, teachers can’t intervene?? Is this true?? If so, that explains a lot. These kids then are in a position of knowing that teachers can’t do anything.

Back in my day, teachers did and could restrain out of control kids.

We don’t have corporal punishment anymore, but, really, can’t we have some common sense standards to deal with these situations?

And who teaches these ghetto youth to go to school and call the teacher a mother——— and all that???? Holy blank, would never have been allowed in my day.

No. Teachers can defend themselves if attacked. That's the real problem.

The other problem is cell phones. Now every situation is caught, edited and on line before the real facts are known.

The cop that decked the kid is an example of editing. You saw the takedown, never saw the hours, days, weeks or months that built-up to the event.

You can bet if the principal called in the SRO this was a really chronic problem with the little kiddie.

yes, there is a court battle right now. a teacher tried to stop a fight and got his head beat in. now the teacher has brain damage and the school district refuses to pay his bills. the school district claims it is against our policies to put a hand on a child, even if it is life threatening conditions.
