I have been a subscriber to National Review for a number of years. I have found its political content within the past few years, to be more focused on the status quo. I still read it for its film and book reviews, but it has lost a lot of ground.
I also subscribe to both Chronicles and First Things and the Atlantic (to find out what the elite are supposed to think).
Chronicles has always been a little bit edgy and sometimes, IMHO, a little over the top. However, I have seen that recently it has broadened its outlook and the writing and articles have improved. There is a challenging group of writers who are nationalistic in the best of senses, and who are not afraid to say what they mean, and mean it.
First Things is doing well under its newest editor, but does push off into sometimes esoteric realms of policy and faith.
For those who are looking for options, thought I would put in my two cents. I enjoy a good journal article and enjoy dead tree for evening readings. Would be happy to hear of other options. Best, soup

I know the Chronicles folks very well, having lived inthe Rockford, IL area for 15 years. Scott Richert is an honest and good man, very intelligent, lives his faith, has instructed his children and led his family well, has a wife who is also VERY intelligent, and is a good man to know.
Who is the newest editor? I have n’t been keeping up on the publication, and the website doesn’t make masthead info easy to find.
I have always appreciated oth of those publications.Chronicles, First Things, and National Review were the three magazines I subscribed to After Buckley died NR slowly became just a Republican mag and I finally ceased to renew. I dropped the other two when I had to retrench financially at one point. Now I get them second hand and late but as they say better late than never. I used to take New Oxford Review, also.
National Review has been crap since William F. Buckley passed away.
