With the news that Gov. John Kasich (R-OH) will suspend his fruitless campaign for president Wednesday at 5PM its worth asking the obvious question: Why now?
Kasich lost every single caucus and primary over the past several months except for his home state of Ohio. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) has more delegates for the nomination than Kasich and hes been out of the race for weeks. So why stay in as long as he did just to drop out when the race finally comes down to just two candidates?
Lets focus on a few key moments of the past several weeks that could lend one to believe that Kasichs main goal was not to win the nomination (obviously) and not to stop Donald Trump for locking up the nomination. No, it appears Kasichs main goal was to stop Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and he succeeded.

The Establishment helped Cruz steal delegates because he seemed the likeliest to stop Trump from getting enough of them. But they don’t really want Cruz either. I’d say that Kasich thought he’d stay in as long as Trump was short of delegates, because he’d be the obvious choice if they managed to eliminate Trump and the convention opened up.
Mitt is pretty well played out, and he’s not running.
Being the lying pos that Trump is, he most likely did.
I’ve already seen other commenters on Legal Insurrection claiming that Trump had been paying Kasich all along.
The TDS is strong over there at what was once a respectable website. They’ve gone Full Beck over there since Cruz lost the South.
Kasich supporters were unlikely to vote Ted. This is just sour grapes
Wonks overthink things. Occam’s Razor. Kasich is a nutcase.
Being the lying pos that Ted is, he lost. Get over it.
If this far fetched motion is true then trump really is smarter than Ted
The establishment hated Cruz more than Trump because as Jimmy Carter said about Trump, “he is malleable”. Carter believed the establishment politicians could cut deals with Trump. Carter said Cruz was an ideologue stuck on his principles and would not be flexible. But there is the question, was Kasich employed by the Establishment, or by Trump to help knock out Cruz? If Kasich is rewarded with the VP spot or some other very high office, then suspicions will be increased, but for now, all is mere speculation.
Time for you to stop now
He (Kasich) didn’t have to work hard. I was for Cruz till I became indifferent to him. I became indifferent on account of his supporters who were jerks and his campaign that operated unethically from Cruz stated values as a Christian. One of Cruz’s supporters stated he was wanting Carson to apologize to Cruz after Cruz apologized to Carson. If Cruz’s supporters had had a better since of apologetic discourse he would had done better.
Correction - It’s NOT what YOU want. You can’t and don’t speak for the millions who voted for Trump.
Thank you- I was thinking the exact same thing.
BULLS***
These people need to feel like Cruz was a real player in this but all forces were arrayed against St. Rafael. I don’t know why but they do. He got Texas and some odds and ends and became ugly while doing it. He wasnt that tough that machinations were needed.
So many Sore Cruzers today.
Here, use this for your butt, Cupcake.
A better alternative answer is that kasich by himself can’t force a contested convention, so there’s no point in staying in.
It makes more sense to believe Cruz and trump had a non-aggression pact until only those polling reasonably well remained. After that it was blood sport best man wins.
He’s sill a left wing sorry pos. Fooled 0nly by his Kim Kardashian supporters.
The pos voted for and supported Reid, Hillary, and Schumer. That’s all I need to know about the NY trash.
Looks like the deal was made. Kasich will be the VP candidate.
