Ted Cruz vowed Monday that hes in for the distance, but if the Texas senator loses Indiana on Tuesday he risks big donors abandoning the Stop Trump effort that has spent millions supporting him in battleground states.
More than a half-dozen Republicans involved in the pro-Cruz and anti-Trump push told POLITICO that Indiana is crucial for Cruz to keeping the cash flowing, as skittish donors have grown weary after a string of recent losses.
If he cant be stopped in Indiana, you will have a lot of people who just throw up their arms and say, Well, I guess he cant be stopped, said Erick Erickson, an influential Republican activist who has tried to organize anti-Trump forces. I think the super donors or the megadonors they stop spending money. Theyre not going to get on board Trump, but theyre not going to continue to invest in what they perceive as a lost cause.
After Trump rolled through the Northeast, winning every county but one in the past six states, the pressure is on Cruz and its showing. Cruz has run through his entire political playbook to save Indiana.
He struck a nonaggression pact with John Kasich. He bought TV ads. His supportive super PACs bought TV ads. He blitzed the Sunday shows. He barnstormed the state on a bus tour. He got the governors endorsement. He even named his running mate.
And if all that is not enough, its not clear what would be both to anti-Trump donors and to those inside his own campaign.
If we lose Indiana, we have to do some soul searching, said one top Cruz adviser, adding things are looking rough right now.

Bill Kristol: Im A Never Trump Guy, But Ill Say Never Say Never
Monday on Newsmax TVs The Steve Malzberg Show, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol, who is a self-described member of the never Trump movement, was asked if theres anything GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump could do to win him over. Kristol said he was never Trump, but added a never say never caveat.
EE tries so hard to be relevant. But alas, he can never be. I would be glad to see him go down with Levin and Beck.
False.
Vote Trump!
And I say that as a guy who voted for him in Pennsylvania last week.
And if all that is not enough, it's not clear what would be ...
Confronting some Trump supporters with the press entourage in tow, that should cinch the deal.
You mean to tell me, people are still spending money on Cruz???
Ericksons ad hoc coalition of anti-Trump Republicans, for instance, is planning a conference call on Wednesday to discuss its next steps, including re-examining a third-party challenge.
Youre already starting to see two tracks moving forward, Erickson said, adding that a Trump win Tuesday would mean much more energy going toward a third-party candidate.
No, per the article, looks like only cRuz is spending money on cRuz.
President-elect Barack Obama spent Tuesday evening at a dinner party with several prominent conservative columnists, including William Kristol and David Brooks of The New York Times, according to an Obama transition pool report.
Mr. Obama, who has been staying at the Hay-Adams Hotel in advance of his inauguration next week, arrived at 9 Grafton Street, an upscale address in Chevy Chase, Md., at 6:34 p.m. The Montgomery County property tax records list this address as the home of the conservative Washington Post columnist George Will, the host of the dinner party. Also attending the party was Charles Krauthammer The Washington Post.
“Never say never.”
In this case, when it is Trump vs. Hillary, you have to consider the things that we KNOW he’ll do better than her:
1) National Defense & Foreign Policy
2) Immigration
3) Trade
4) Trying to get the budget under control
5) Treating veterans well
I think that there are many other things that he’ll do better, but if he ONLY does those, then it is insane to sit this out and let Hillary come to power. Keep in mind that Trump won’t be corrupt at all (he clearly doesn’t need to be, and would be stupid beyond belief to even try) and he has no tolerance for the Uber-Left and their PC nonsense - meaning that we have a very good shot at getting some fine Supreme Court justices vs. a GUARANTEE of all Uber-Leftists with Hillary.
I am a fan of being magnanimous in victory - and if those of us in Trump’s corner want the pro-Cruz forces to help us defeat Hillary, we need to avoid bashing them for not picking the winner. Haven’t we ALL been there at one point or another (or repeatedly)? Let’s be decent and welcome them aboard. Yes, even Kristol.
;)
Never Trump is really the Cheap Labor Express paying propagandists to ensure never-ending illegal alien inundation.
;)
Or else Trump wins right???
LOL..... S.M.H.
A third party is literally insane - NO third party has won, EVER, unless you count the Republicans themselves after the Whigs imploded (but almost all Whigs became Republicans, so it was more a re-branding than a genuinely new party).
If a massively popular ex-President couldn’t win with a third party (T.R. as a Bull Moose), then NO ONE can or ever will...and there’s no one of 1/10 of his stature to run, on top of everything else.
I can only surmise that anyone who genuinely supports a third party in these circumstances is a Hillary supporter.
Of course, if Bernie Sanders wants to run as a third party candidate, I’ll support that. Let the OTHER side implode by dividing itself.
Third paartiers want Hillary more than anyone else any want to hand the election to her. Pathetic.
