A red Ferrari with the top down swerved past on the winding dirt road, heading to what looked like a small Mars encampment. Helicopters landed on the side of the road and greeters darted across. At a farmers market with overflowing baskets full of raspberries, watermelons, and focaccia, I asked for a mango, and the farmer started cutting it in half for me: Thatll be $7.
This weekend, outside Las Vegas, a group of Burning Man veterans put on a festival called Further Future, now in its second year. Across 49 acres of Native American land over three days, with around 5,000 attendees, the event was the epitome of a new trend of so-called transformational festivals that are drawing technologists for whats billed as a mix of fun and education. While tickets started at $350, many attendees opted for upgrades to fully staffed accommodation and fine dining.

Burning Man, eh? I’ll bet there are some jihadists who’d just love to be there for “keeping it real”.
Wouldn’t he be appropriating Pimp Culture in that outfit? #triggered ? /s
Maybe they should call it Burning Dorks.
Looked very boring.
Well I don’t have a Ferrari convertible but I do have a bucket list item that’s close...
An old Cadillac Covertable with cattle horns on the front grill.... A full moon lit night on a lonely highway doing 90 MPH with a car full of my old crazy friends, top down with the wind blowing through our hair, us hootin and holleren...
Hank Williams full blast on the radio with us drinking whiskey and beer.
Throwing the empty cans straight up in the air and shootin em w pistols
Stop and pee on some cactus
Then I can die knowing it was a good life and everythings going to be OK
Roger that.
“Tanning man”
Having attended events of this caliber, I can tell you that when they say “every need and desire is met” they mean hookers. LOTS of hookers. Like, I bet every woman there is a hooker.
I once read a Playboy profile of Lee Marvin, who was doing something very similar at the time, I believe down in Tucson. He took the author on a ride down an Arizona highway while he drank tequila and shot at road signs.
And, how many do you suppose would survive in a real post apocalyptic scenario? Less than 25%? Less than 10%. Wasteland is pretty fitting. Being where we are, when burning man pops up, we get to see the hundreds of RV’s and rental motor homes that get brought in to support the folks living rough. I sure wouldn’t want the clean up job after a week on the “playa”. From tour type busses to small camper types, it runs the gamut. And I’m sure it ain’t cheap.
