Chris Gaither was home alone petting the dogs on Wednesday morning when he heard a noise upstairs.
The 11-year-old boy from Talladega, Ala., told NBC affiliate WVTM-TV that he was scared, so he grabbed a knife and steadied himself.
Chris said that a man appeared on the stairwell, but when confronted, he ran back up upstairs. When the man reappeared moments later, the boy told WVTM-TV, the individual was holding a gun.
When he was coming down the stairs, thats when he told me he was going to kill me, f-you and all that, Chris said.
Instead of running, Chris told the station, he upgraded his weaponry, picking up a 9mm handgun that was in the home.
Chris said he threatened to kill the man and ordered him to get out of the house.
I guess when I pulled the gun out on him he didnt think it was a real gun cause he didnt worry about it, Chris told the station. He just kept on walking.

Kid should be arrested for having a gun. Parents to be arrested for child abuse (11yo left alone) and had access to a gun. No reason to read article comments. Also kid most likely to be suspended from school, sent to counseling for pointing a gun, endangering someone, ect ect ect ....
Give that kid a badge and he will clean up the neighborhood.

I do like this one, however: "Terrible parenting. Who loads a home self-defense gun with FMJ rounds? A decent parent would have put JHPs in that gun. None of this through-and-through wounding nonsense. A caring parent would have enabled their child to inflict maximum hydro-static shock in this criminal."
Kid might be in trouble for shooting after the guy left and was fleeing. Would have been better, legally speaking, if he shot the bastard dead in the living room.
But what the hell - “child endangerment” for leaving an 11 year old alone home in their house? Is that serious? WTF?
Thank you (I did say “please”): there must be some Freepers commenting on Post stories because of ones like what you pointed out. But for the most part, the comments were “why does a kid have access to a gun” types.
1. Maybe this is the best thing that could happen to the meth-head. He has a chance to dry out a bit in the hospital and re-think his life. (No, I don’t think it’s likely, but it’s a possibility.)
2. Good for the kid. The article did say that the family had been robbed before. I bet they won’t be robbed much any more.
The parents thought he was mature enough to be left at home alone. Then he proved that they were right.
From the article:
“Once the man made it outside, Chris fired a warning shot. The man, who was carrying a stolen laundry hamper, began running. Chris emptied the clip, firing off 12 shots by the time the intruder neared a fence in the familys front yard, the 11-year-old told the station.”
Good thing he’s only 11. Otherwise, he’d be in jail.
I'd call it child empowerment.
These WAPO people need to remember this was in Alabama..
Most of us southern families teach out kids about guns and how to use them at an early age...I’m from Tennessee and my son started squirrel hunting at 9...He killed his first deer at 11... He probably knew more about firearms and gun safety at that age than most pajama wearing liberals will ever know...
That might work in movies but in real life the lowlife has NO SENSE OF HONOR ... the perp would have killed the boy if he had thought the gun was real.
When confronting a thug in your home do NOT make the mistake to giving him a 'fair chance to do right'... they will take that opportunity to kill you. If thugs had any concept of 'fair' they would NOT be robbing your home.
The boy should have hid OR shot the man.
No warnings.
Also, thank God the man's father taught him how to use a gun and how to protect himself...
An eleven year old male generally has a disadvantage in the maturity necessary to properly speak about or respond to, a home invasion incident like this, but comprehensive training would help. This boy is an easy target for a foul ball reporter seeking to discredit him and his family.
Nobody's perfect, but families should engage in training and discussion for all emergency situations.
The story says that the boy was petting the dogs when the trouble started. No mention of the dogs after that. The family needs to upgrade their dogs,Good dogs would be right in the middle of the fight.
In my state, “a person may not store or leave a loaded firearm in a location where the person knew or should have known that an unsupervised child would gain access to the firearm.”
I taught my kids to shoot and how to answer the inevitable questions if they had to shoot. “I’m not supposed to touch the guns without my parents there, but I’ve watched my dad unlock the safe so I could guess the combination. I was afraid that the intruder would hurt me or hurt a family member. I don’t want to say anything else until I talk with my dad and with a lawyer.” Then don’t say anything at all until a parent and a lawyer are both present.
My kids were taught not to shoot unless they could say that truthfully, and not to get into a situation where they could not reach a loaded firearm in time. Weapons first, cell phone second, retreat third and only if the entire family can get out safely in an emergency.
“The story says that the boy was petting the dogs when the trouble started. No mention of the dogs after that. The family needs to upgrade their dogs,Good dogs would be right in the middle of the fight.”
Dat true but what can you expect from Bassett Hounds: they are great for hunting down perps or treeing coons but not so good acting vicious. They are lovers, not fighters!
Who was crying like a baby? Headline rejected.
Yep - next headline up: "Social Services Removes 11 Year Old From Negligent/Abusive Household".....
