My High School coach had a name of W. Coon.
Little did we realize that whenever we ‘talked’ to him we were being racist.
Guess it tripled itself as he had all 3 sports the school offered. 6 man football, basketball and baseball.
Plus he did Drivers Ed and Gym.
Turned out quite a few 3 letter men, some for 4 years.
The coaches favorite expression was ‘intestinal fortitude’.
The Marines taught him a lot of ‘big words’ and in our little corner of NY when you mentioned Coon, you were referring to Our Coach.
Didn’t have very many Black families in our District and I had forgotten that one of the Athletes was Black.
Some ‘accused’ me of being Racist because I ‘forgot’ the Black Guy.
My answer/explanation is/was, I forgot him because his presence, was neither outstanding or mediocre. Just one of the Guys - Of course he was 2 years behind me so he fell in the category of ALL Freshmen to the Juniors and Seniors....
