Sen. Ted Cruz for the first time said he believes the Republican Party is headed to a contested convention.
Cruz had previously called a contested convention likely and that it seemed the party was heading in that direction. But after a disappointing third-place loss in New York Tuesday, the Texas Republican is no longer saying he plans to beat front-runner Donald Trump at the ballot box.
"We are headed to a contested convention, Cruz said in an interview with Philadelphia talk-radio personality Chris Stigall this morning. At this point, nobody is getting 1,237. Donald is going to talk all the time about other folks not getting to 1,237; hes not getting there either. None of us are getting to 1,237.
And hes right about one thing. After the New York primary, it is now mathematically impossible for Cruz to clinch the Republican nomination using bound or pledged delegates before the July convention in Cleveland.

I can’t wait for Ted Cruz and the psychos who are his most vigorous supporters here to be smitten from the face of the earth. That will be a day for celebration.
Excellent point. Even IF Trump gets the nomination in Cleveland, he better learn to kiss GOP-e ass PDQ or be cut off from the insider benefits that have given Ted the edge he now has. As well as losing the support of Repubs in Congress and in all 50 states. As well as losing all the conservative voter support.
Trump may bully his way to a nomination. But let him try and bully a united Democrat Party AND a united Republican Party for all the marbles. The Uniparty will crush him.
He will lose 40-45 states in a double digit loss.
Wow.
A contested convention is kind of obvious at this point. Before NY we knew that was the case.
While Cruz is mathematically eliminated on Round 1 voting.
Round 2 voting and future rounds Trump is mathematically eliminated. And each round Cruz gets more odds of getting to 1237.
Cruz has said repeatedly that Kasich should drop out and make it a two-person race. Trump thinks they both should drop out since they have no shot at all to 1,237.
Ted Cruz was talking about it a month ago. He said Kasich should drop out because he was mathematically eliminated from getting to 1237 on the first ballot.
Last night that happened to Ted. He was eliminaTED. But he won't take his own advise and drop out.
Trump is the one destroying the party...I thought that was a good thing. But cruz splitting them in half is a bad thing?
Hmmmmm....
And before that he was saying a contested convention was not going to happen. In the first week of March he was arguing the only way to beat Trump was to get to 1237 on the first vote, and that the other candidates should drop out because he was the only one who could do it.
Cruz is an insufferable, arrogant jerk is what he is.
eliminaTED
Although I would tend to agree with you, I have doubts. Why? Because Trump has the middle class on his side-the ones hurt the most by the crap that the elites have brought these past years.
Goldwater was a real conservative, and I watched as the same insider elites worked to destroy him in that election. I.E. ROMNEY.
But this is more like the 1980 election where people had enough and Reagan finally cleaned house.
Exactly! The dreams that Trump will win the NE is a pipedream. Maybe NH. or maybe if there is a blizzard that day. I have no doubt those that want Trump will vote for him so maybe a natural disaster could happen and then he might be able to get more votes than Hillary or Bernie.
I’m looking forward to what Cruz has to say when he comes in dead last in the primaries next Tuesday, and collects 0 delegates.
Cruz is toast
Whenever one hears “contested convention”, substitute the phrase “runoff election”’ and then ask yourself if all the outrage and hyperbole is justified.
I swear this is a contest between him and Kasich to say the absolute most delusional dumbass thing possible.
