Merkel allows prosecution of German comedian who mocked Turkish president

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has cleared the way for the prosecution of German comedian Jan Böhmermann, whose poem mocking Turkey's president has become the centerpiece of a clash between Germany's free-speech traditions and the government's efforts to safeguard its important relations with Turkey.
In a news conference Friday, Merkel emphasized that it will now be up to German courts to decide whether Böhmermann is guilty of insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. But critics — including members of her own government — have described it as a betrayal of values protecting open expression.

Posted 12 November 2015 — Berlin police say they’ve raided 10 buildings in the German capital as part of a crackdown on far-right hate speech on social media networks.
Police said Thursday that the morning raids involved 60 officers, who confiscated smartphones and computers as evidence, which are now being evaluated. They didn’t have any immediate information on arrests.
They say the raids are part of an ongoing investigation into hate speech spread over social media meant to incite people against asylum-seekers and refugee housing.
Berlin’s top security official, Frank Henkel, says authorities “won’t turn away if racism or incitement is being spread on the Internet.”
He says that the authorities alone can’t police hate speech online and appealed for social networks themselves to combat it more effectively.

That's the way people i.e. liberals think. We're talking about a nasty politician, Erdogan. The comedian didn't threaten Erdogan...he said he might have performed some sexual acts involving animals. And for that he should be arrested.
If that goes through, no politician can ever be satirized again. Of course, this is simply erstwhile spineless libs giving in to fascist dictators. Libs are licking their chops hoping to prosecute conservatives for saying bad things about King Barck.
