Cold greeting for Cruz at GOP gala
The Hll ^ | 04/14/2016 | Jessie Hellmann

Presidential hopeful Ted Cruz got the cold shoulder from a room of 800 Republicans at the New York City GOP gala Thursday night, receiving little interaction from the audience as he went through his usual stump speech.

Cruz, who followed speeches from rivals Donald Trump and John Kasich, began by making a joke at Trump’s expense that fell flat. “I haven’t built any buildings in New York City, but I have spent my entire life fighting to defend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights,” the Texas senator said, taking a shot at the GOP front-runner who, just moments before, spent the majority of his speech talking about his New York real estate successes.

Media at the scene reported guests walking around and talking during Cruz’s address.

-- I jumped to CNN and watched the fun between Hillary and Sanders. --

That was the place to be. I was there even during a good part of Trump's time at the podium. The GOP race is at a fairly predictable point, the DEM race, not so much.

I’m not a Trump supporter, but my hat’s off to you for that post.

Good job of persuasively touting your guy’s strengths.

Thank you, your remark made my day.

Obviously I believe that Trump has the country's best interests at heart. And I understand and respect that others get an opposite vibe, seeing Trump as a self-serving huckser, carnival barker.

I don't think that difference in view is amenable to reasoned debate, because the opposing points of view rely on more than objective evidence. I could argue my point of view, but I know it would never persuade somebody who is in the opposing camp.

Anyway, thanks again.

He and his speech writers determined that opening line was good???

That’s a good point. However there are always some folks who will evaluate solid evidence persuasively presented, so it doesn’t hurt to try, even though it may seem a bit futile when presented either to the choir or to the angry opposition. :-)

True that. I will say, when I composed that, I wasn't in a "persuasive" mood. I mistakenly thought I was posting in a Trump rally thread, preaching to the already converted!

I've made a very deliberate effort to not interact with any angry opposition. I think adding more noise to an already noisy place is a disservice. There is no upside, other than whatever satisfaction a person gets from venting their spleen in public.

I have noticed that. It’s to your credit. In the current climate, your posts do stand out from the noise, so there’s a tactical advantage to you for holding that line.

If for nothing else than it saves me time and keeps my emotions from being agitated by strangers!

Just saying, it's not much to credit - sometimes self-serving and group-serving approaches are the same thing.

This be why he will never get the nomination.

In a perfect world, as they say. However, this is a corrupt, no holds barred, cheat to win world.

It’s true, I honestly don’t know who Cboldt supports. That’s meant as a complement to him not an insult to anyone else. I suppose with some digging I could figure it out but I’d rather not know at this point. (So don’t tell me please!)

I’m tired of fighting with FReepers I’ve known (by name) for years. If (or “when” is looking more likely every day) Trump gets to 1237 delegates I’m hitting the reset button and forgetting all the recent fights. I hope everyone else will do the same with me.

There is no comparing Trump to Hillary; so at that time we will have to press forward as a united front.

Thank you very much for that! I am an engineer (or was, well, I guess still am, P.E. still valid), come from sort of that neck of the woods, love good stories about engineering projects, but living in New England the last 30 years, really don't have a clue about building projects going on, anywhere, unless they make big news or are brought to my attention.

Looking at that tower, finished, it is hard to figure out how and why it gets the distinction of being the largest concrete building in the US. Dig into the construction details - fascinating.

Thank you again.

Cruz is the GOPe favorite. He is supported by our entire mainstream GOP. He is a favorite of the same people who have sold out individual Americans at work, by selling out millions of American jobs, to China.

He is supported by Mitt Romney. He is supported by John McCain. He is supported by Bush. He is supported my the entire GOP establishment. All of them.

Trump is the one people want. Individual Americans. Millions of them fill stadium, after stadium, after stadium everywhere. They all support Trump strongly.

Those people are not the people, your statement is against. I think the people you are trying to make a statement to, are the same ones who are now supporting Cruz. Sorry but I do.

Cruz is now fighting Trump, on behalf of the entire GOP establishment.

He just is.

You need to look at who you are supporting once again.

This isn’t just about Texas. Texas has a number of very real grievances from history. I get that, but now is not the time, and Cruz is not the candidate, to address those.

America needs Trump.

Great post & analysis. Cruz looks smaller and weaker by the day. The more I listen to him the less I like him. Doing his “victory dance” and bragging because millions of people in Colorado were disenfranchised the right to vote is stupid, obnoxious, and only fits in a Communist dictatorship. Fighter for the Constitution? Fighter for the people? What a joke. He’s temporary tool of the GOPe and is interested in schmoozing and twisting the votes of the delegates, more than winning the hearts and votes of the people. People are seeing through his shenanigans and he’s dropping in the polls like a rock - as he should. TRUMP 2016

The Gala was supposed to be televised on C-SPAN 2. They showed the speeches of Cox and most of Martinez. Then they had "technical difficulties" and switched to recorded shows of Nancy Pelosi, etc. Washington Journal. The announcer told the tv audience that the speeches would be recorded and played later. Surprise, surprise, when I checked this morning, they didn't have the speeches of the candidates.

It was Trump's best speech, in my opinion, but not recorded on C-SPAN. To extend their bias beyond just all Republican candidates, the original screen promoting the show listed Cruz and Kasich but you had to click in a menu to get "more speakers" to see Trump's name. I watched C-Span with no sound while I watched the actual speeches on rsbn.org. C-SPAN is just another arm of the Democraticparty.
