New Balance is renewing its opposition to the far-reaching Pacific Rim trade deal, saying the Obama administration reneged on a promise to give the sneaker maker a fair shot at military business if it stopped bad-mouthing the agreement.
After several years of resistance to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a pact aimed at making it easier to conduct trade among the United States and 11 other countries, the Boston company had gone quiet last year. New Balance officials say one big reason is that they were told the Department of Defense would give them serious consideration for a contract to outfit recruits with athletic shoes.
But no order has been placed, and New Balance officials say the Pentagon is intentionally delaying any purchase.
New Balance is reviving its fight against the trade deal, which would, in part, gradually phase out tariffs on shoes made in Vietnam. A loss of those tariffs, the company says, would make imports cheaper and jeopardize its factory jobs in New England.

In the show business, New Balance is one of the closest things to good guys going. They still have some production stateside, and they don’t go so crazy on the $300 ghetto gear with crazy endorsements, but make a good sneaker/show for real people. They also are better than most at making wide widths. Best sneakers I had since my $35 Clyde Frazier pumas, which shall never be matched.
I was in the military during the 1980s. I don’t remember ever being issued “sneakers.” If you wanted sneakers, you had to buy them yourself at the PX. Otherwise you did your running in combat boots.

For the last 30 years on the tennis court, i wore New Balance shoes exclusively. No other shoe comes even close to the comfort of their shoes. Made for Americans in the USA
Agreed!I was in during the late 60’s and 70’s, We always ran in our jump boots and we ran everywhere every day, I think this started when women started entering the service in large numbers and they found that they could not run in boots without a majority sustaining shin splints and foot problems, so they allowed them to run in athletic shoes and of course once the door opened they had to allow the men to run in sneakers too. Hate to say it but training has become feminized and that is not going to serve us well when the SHTF.
Yeah, the “We were willing to sell out American workers for a place at the public pig trough, but Uncle Sam pulled a fast one” is a hard whine to swallow.
I was issued sneakers in AF basic in 93.
We wore them for PT, sometimes with PT short and tshirts, sometimes with full BDUs.

I used to wear their shoes. But every year they would make a different shoe. I got fed up and started buying Merrel’s. Wow! What a comfy shoe.
IIRC, we started doing PT in sneakers in 1984, my last year on active duty. Up until then, my PT was done wearing my "comfortable" jump boots.
Willing to sell out the country for a bribe and they got burned; folks in liberal New England will be hurt. Maybe the TPP has some merit, after all.
Not all of them. Their 473 line is or may still be.
The more expensive lines that I've checked are made in Asia.
It's been my experience the American made lines fit really well. The Asian lines are ill fitting.
I wear 4E and in the Asian lines the sizes are all over the place, usually smaller than the domestic made.
I wrote them and told them my experience. Never heard back from them.
Been buying their shoe exclusively for years.
