Weak and Getting Weaker: Electability argument against Trump in the general election is hardening
Weekly Standard ^ | 04/10/2016 | Jonathan Last

Posted on 04/10/2016 8:52:03 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Of all the arguments against Donald Trump, the softest has been his poor prospects for victory in the general election. True, he has consistently polled worse against Hillary Clinton than have Ted Cruz, John Kasich, and virtually every other person who ran. But polls change. And if Trump were to win the Republican nomination, it would be such an earthquake that the political order might be transformed. Clinton, moreover, has huge vulnerabilities. She lacks many basic political skills, and she is a hostage to fortune—in both the usual way, as the heir to an incumbent president, and in the unusual one of being the subject of an FBI investigation.

Yet the electability argument against Trump is hardening, fast. He has a 67 percent unfavorable rating (per the Washington Post/ABC News poll), which would be the highest ever recorded for a major-party nominee, and a net favorable rating of minus-39 among white women and minus-31 among independents. Trump's numbers aren't just bad; they're the stuff of nightmares.

When you add up all of the data, there are four reasons to suspect Trump's chances in the general election are incredibly slim.

(1) The appeal of Trump was supposed to be that he would expand the electorate by bringing home white voters who didn't turn out for Mitt Romney in 2012. Looking at Trump's numbers among whites, it's not clear how he could do that—his favorability numbers are underwater not just among whites generally, but even among non-college-educated whites (where he's minus-7) and white men (minus-4).

But the Trump-wins-by-turning-out-white-Republicans theory breaks down fatally when you look at where Trump is with every other group. In order to claw his way into the poor position he's in with white voters, Trump has cheesed off every other demographic group: He's minus-53 with self-described moderates;

“say hello to President Hilary Clinton”.

Last time I heard something like that was at a 2000 victory party election night. Some jackass said say hello to President Gore. Then shortly after W wins West Virginia.

Never had a President Gore, and will never have a President Hilary.

That would be the only positive if Cruz ran, a huge defeat but that’s not good for the country. Getting rid of Cruz during the primary is a better option for America.

Otherwise known as the controlled opposition. This is what we have been dealing with—the pseudo conservative media—even the religious media like Salem broadcasting. This is how they have kept us on the Republican plantation all these years. They want our votes but they don’t want our opinions. With the controlled opposition they can talk about a wide variety of topics just as long as they keep away from a few topics that the GOPe doesn’t want people talking about such as the TPA and illegal alien cheap labor.

Currently polls have Trump losing Utah and Mississippi to Hillary,

What poll shows Trump losing to Hillary in Mississippi? There is a Mason-Dixon poll (not known for accuracy) that shows Trump with only a three point lead, but it is beyond absurd to think Trump would lose Mississippi to Hillary.

If it wasn’t for the controlled GOPe caucuses Cruz would have far fewer delegates.

have you noticed that all the focus on electability is focused on Trump? Even though Hilary and Sanders are the 2 most unelectable candidates in american history! Even if i were a space alien i would choose Trump over Hilary and Sanders.

It takes a special breed of professional conservative asshat to look at Ted Cruz and say he will win in November against Hillary or Bernie.

Is he superior to them? Yes. Would be be a better president than either? Of course.

Will he get 270 electoral votes? Of course not. It won’t even be close.

Oh absolutely. I can’t believe Cruz is taken seriously at all. Cruz has a very difficult time when voters get to vote. Cruz has won Wisconsin, Idaho, Texas, and Oklahoma. The other states he “won” we’re less then 1 percent of the voter population or less where voters don’t vote at all.

Romney didn’t need to contribute to democrats to get a building permit to keep a workforce employed. Romney was too busy as a corporate raider breaking up companies and laying off people.

And he was also too busy pushing for homosexual marriage, gun control, abortion on demand, globalization, universal healthcare, illegal alien amnesty, all the issues that Obama pushes for, Romney was pushing for and is still active directing the RNC to deny voters their choice in Donald Trump.

“For the same reason Sarah Palin has high negatives. A constant, day in and day out drumbeat of hatred spewed by Fox News in particular, egghead talking heads and magazine pundits, popular but moronic celebrities, etc. Who could withstand this stuff?”

So what will change if Trump is nominated? Do you think the media will suddenly fall in love with Trump? That “stuff” will be magnified tens of times by the Clinton campaign. If Trump can’t withstand Fox News, how will he withstand the Clinton campaign?

Same argument torpedoes Cruz; Kasich is your man.

It doesn’t matter

Trump needs to spread his message into blue collar states and redraw the EV map. That is exciting

We need to throw out conventional wisdom and rewrite the book.

Exactly.

The machine lies. They are consistent and have been throughout this election cycle why should I believe they would tell the truth now?

Get used to it because if he’s the nominee they’ll have a barrage of opposition research that is currently available but barely being used and hidden info. Trump is still ahead and surviving this onslaught. You’re guy will probably collapse like a cheap camera.
