Weak and Getting Weaker: Electability argument against Trump in the general election is hardening
Weekly Standard ^ | 04/10/2016 | Jonathan Last

Posted on 04/10/2016 8:52:03 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Of all the arguments against Donald Trump, the softest has been his poor prospects for victory in the general election. True, he has consistently polled worse against Hillary Clinton than have Ted Cruz, John Kasich, and virtually every other person who ran. But polls change. And if Trump were to win the Republican nomination, it would be such an earthquake that the political order might be transformed. Clinton, moreover, has huge vulnerabilities. She lacks many basic political skills, and she is a hostage to fortune—in both the usual way, as the heir to an incumbent president, and in the unusual one of being the subject of an FBI investigation.

Yet the electability argument against Trump is hardening, fast. He has a 67 percent unfavorable rating (per the Washington Post/ABC News poll), which would be the highest ever recorded for a major-party nominee, and a net favorable rating of minus-39 among white women and minus-31 among independents. Trump's numbers aren't just bad; they're the stuff of nightmares.

When you add up all of the data, there are four reasons to suspect Trump's chances in the general election are incredibly slim.

(1) The appeal of Trump was supposed to be that he would expand the electorate by bringing home white voters who didn't turn out for Mitt Romney in 2012. Looking at Trump's numbers among whites, it's not clear how he could do that—his favorability numbers are underwater not just among whites generally, but even among non-college-educated whites (where he's minus-7) and white men (minus-4).

But the Trump-wins-by-turning-out-white-Republicans theory breaks down fatally when you look at where Trump is with every other group. In order to claw his way into the poor position he's in with white voters, Trump has cheesed off every other demographic group: He's minus-53 with self-described moderates;

You’ve got that right, and I suspect the reverse would happen if Ted Cruz won the nomination and then lost to Hillary or Sanders. When all is said and done, it is the GOP who really is behind all of the acrimony. Alas, the Stupid Party is also the Petty Party which means they are the Pitiful Party.

Weekly Standard is published by a Neocon who gleefully proclaimed the era of Reagan is over.

that’s all I think you need to know.

For the same reason Sarah Palin has high negatives. A constant, day in and day out drumbeat of hatred spewed by Fox News in particular, egghead talking heads and magazine pundits, popular but moronic celebrities, etc. Who could withstand this stuff?

I still believe Trump will smash Hillary if the nominee.

RE: I’ve asked this many times of Cruz supporters and have never gotten anything but crickets. Assuming Cruz wins a contested convention on the 2nd, 3rd, whatever ballot, what is his path to 270?

Objectively, at this point in time, unless Hillary gets indicted, neither Cruz nor Trump are going to beat Hillary. That’s just the way things are as of this time.

There’s a significant number who are still establishment supporters, but a huge number want to see the GOP destroyed ( and that’s a huge number within the GOP itself ). The GOP is DIVIDED today.

Let’s face it, this country is becoming more and more center left, when in the past, it was more center right.

Cruz will lose to Hillary, but so will Trump ( I think by an even bigger spread ).

This is going to change very quickly once Trump becomes the nominee.

Let them have Utah

Stop bending over backwards for the Mormons

Trump attracts blue collar workers, states like Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, and the like are in play

Why barely win with Utah nutjobs, when you can appeal to the rust belt and blue collar workers and blow this thing out of the water?

Utah, 6 measly EV

NY, NJ, PA, OHIO, MI 79

We win those state, we got the Whitehouse

We need to think outside the box on this, stop assuming this election will be like the 5 and redraw the EV map

Trump is the only GOP candidate with national appeal.

Cruz is at best a strong regional candidate, if we leave in his wins in ME, AK and WI off the table.

Kasich has won zero states outside his home state of OH.

Jonathan Last must be using Common Core math to make the argument about Trump’s unelectability.

And gee, he will sweep the Northeast in in the closing weeks of this month.

The morons at Weekly Standard were proclaiming Trump would never be the GOP nominee. Now they’re writing he can’t win the general election.

That and 2 cents will tell us how much their political analysis has held up so far this year.

#NeverTrumpers will never be convinced by the facts.

A blind man can see it. In the General, Trump gets slaughtered. Sadly, Cruz would do no better.
