A 25-year-old Louisiana woman made history this week after becoming the first female to enlist in the US Army Infantry School.

Tammy Grace Barnett, a former police officer, took the oath of enlistment on Thursday at the Military Entrance Processing Station in Shreveport.

Barnett initially planned to join the military police, before deciding she wanted to serve her country on the front lines.

My daughter’s ship saw a rise in pregnancies right before WESPAC

You nailed it. Physical limitations are trivial compared to the impact on unit cohesiveness, which can be tolerated to a point in combat support units, but not at the tip of the spear.

Welcome home brother. I loved the redlegs. Forward observers and FDC’s could perform miracles of accuracy and responsiveness from both battalion and corp level. Our FO could adjust by sound better than many could visually. They saved my outfit on many an occasion, once with a TOT shoot that broke up a NVA assault on our NDP.. I literally owe my life to guys like you.

That was because despite todays hit movies, sniping is something you can quickly teach and use, and it is very useful in a defensive war, with huge piles of rubble that were formerly great cities. You could shove a Nagant in a woman’s hand, put her in a building with food, and wish her luck.

Key word: "defensive". Women can do OK in an environment where they aren't going anywhere, just holding a position, and where men did the work of bringing her gear and supplies to her position.

The women snipers also knew that, if they allowed the Germans to get to them, things would get unpleasant. They had nowhere to run, and in the Russian army if you tried to run, you would get shot.

On the bright side, it means we are less likely to intervene in places like Iraq.

No one of good will is unduly denigrating this woman. I am sure she is a patriot who loves her country, and that she will do her best. Most of us are trying to explain as to how the ultimate end of this POLICY will serve to weaken the combat efficiency and ability of ground units whose primary task is to close with, engage and destroy similar enemy units, particularly those that can project a comparable level of battlefield combat power as the US.

I find it interesting that we are all agreed that men and women cannot compete equally and fairly in professional sports such as TENNIS and GOLF, but we are now saying that this doesn’t apply to the gravest of human activities, warfare, particularly ground combat? If speed, strength, power and endurance has any place at all it is there. Women will always generally be lesser in all those areas, and it is from the general population that replacements must be procured.

The few exceptions are not worth the logistical burden that their accommodation would require.

She doesn’t look particularly fit, and being that broad across the beam, her lack of upper body strength is going to be a major disadvantage.

Women in ships was a dumbass idea right FRom the get-go

In 1994, USS Eisenhower (CVN-69), was one of the first combat vessels to have women assigned. The “Ike” soon became known as “The Loveboat;” there were, “officially,” 15 pregnancies. Scuttlebutt has it that the female pregnancy rate was on the order of 35%.

As you can tell, I am hardover opposed to women in ships!

The military mission is to kill people and break things.

There is no way women in combat improve our military’s ability to kill people and break things.

Support roles; YES!

Combat roles; NO!

Back a few years ago, Natick Labs conducted a study of troops in Afghanistan, and they found the average combat load carried by each soldier was 63 pounds... That’s the K pot, body armor, weapon, ammo, water, etc totaling approximately 36% of the soldiers body weight.

The average “approach march” load out is 96 pounds or 55% of his weight. An “emergency approach” loadout is on average 127 pounds or 71% of his body weight. A 60mm mortar section leader would carry 142 pounds on emergency approach which is 97% of his body weight.

She is in for a serious reality check especially @ Ft Benning during the summer.

My bet is she chapters out or reclasses before the fourth week.

A very big problem is . . . .

The politically correct Pentagon, Congress, and Selective Service System uses the women who volunteer as a precedent to say, "Oh, then ALL women must."

"If some young women want to, then ALL young women must enlist, because this is 'fairness.'"
