When I connected via ethernet, I can connect to FR on both. With Firefox, when I initially connected via my Bookmarks, FR came right up, and I scrolled through the posts. At one point, when I tried to connect to an older post, Firefox took me to a Time Warner page which listed FR and its link. Clicking on the link took me to FR Latest Articles. There was an option on the Time Warner page to find out:

Don't know what the hell that means, but since I use an ethernet connection most of the time, I'll keep connecting to FR that way. Hopefully this problem with the DNS will be worked out, and I'll be able to connect via wireless again.
Not a techie but using the numerical address 192 168 1 254 I could access the site but still no log on.
Changed this AM to 50 116 23 211 and now seems OK can do everything.
?? remains whose problem is this and do I leave the new DNS things in?
Added the hosts file entry per recommendation above and that fixed it just fine.
If you want on FR right now and can’t wait for the DNS update, change your HOST file that is found here.
The path under windows:
%SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
Open up with “hosts” file with notepad.
And add this line.
“209.157.64.200 www.freerepublic.com”
You may have to change the permissions to the “hosts” file under “Users” for the file to accept or save the addition.
Click on properties and the tab “security” and highlight the “Users” line.
Check mark the boxes “full control” which should also automatically check the boxes for “modify” and “write”.
click “apply” or “OK” for dialog box.
You are done and back on FR. :)
It must have something to do with Frontier Communications. FreeRepublic is the only website I can’t access. I’m only able to get FR when I shut off wifi.
Using the IP address allows me to view the site, but won’t allow me to sign in. Keep getting “404 error message - That’s odd...Microsoft Edge can’t find this page”.
Frustrating, to say the least!
My AT&T Wireless devices find FR but not when using TimeWarnerCable REGARDLESS of OS.
Frontier Telecom is creative I had help from NYRepublican to fix.
Later
Is the USG or someone else trying to degrade our communications?
Hard-wired to Charter modem and can now log-in to FR on my laptop. But still cannot do it if using wireless—using Belkin wireless router, I get the “can’t find page” message.
209.157.64.200 freerepublic.com
On the Mac, it should start working right away, however Windows has a cache in memory that must be flushed before it will start working. The easiest way to do this is to just reboot the computer. If you want to skip the reboot, just open a CMD prompt and run "ipconfig /flushdns". Also, restart your browser, as some browsers also cache this information. The only thing I still notice is that on my Samsung Galaxy S6 phone I still can’t go on this site, it directs me back to t-mobile’s home page
as of 11:00am mountain time, comcast dns server:
nrcns.cmc.co.denver.comcast.net
is unable to resolve www.freerepublic.com or freerepublic.com
i added entries into my hosts file to enable access.
I spoke too soon! Was OK hardwired on laptop for about an hour, but now Charter is redirecting me when I go to FR website. I’m back now using my cell phone to access FR.
I lost FR sometime in the last 2 hours (Verizon).
Put the good stuff into the hosts file, and now seems OK.
I’m on win 7, other versions might be different.
To edit the hosts files, you must run notepad as administrator. To do this, navigate to the notepad.exe file (in the Windows directory), right click, and select “Run As Administrator). Then, from notepad, navigate to the C:/windows/system32/drivers/etc folder, select “all files” and open the hosts file.
You might have to enable the display of hidden files, through the tools/folder-options/view menu selection
Be sure to enter “209.157.64.200 www.freerepublic.com”, the first time I tried it, I left out the “www” part, and it didn’t work.
Can’t reach FR through LAN. We’re served through Frontier, now. It’s good on my Windows phone through Verizon.
I had to re-login to Facebook this morning, but Twitter was fine.
however, this is the first time I've seen it continue during the day.
Something else must have happened, such as forgetting to turn on the DNS server after the maintenance.
Here's how:

The message I get: This page cant be displayed.
At home, Comcast is our internet provider. I cant log in to FR using either the Wi-Fi, or the PC thats hard-wired to the service.
In the car this morning I was able to access FR via cellular using the Verizon 4GLTE connection.
In the car a couple hours later I got the page cant be displayed message again again via Verizon 4GLTE connection.
This worked for me... I couldn’t even log in...

Fix DNS Problems
A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.
Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type “ipconfig /flushdns” and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :
If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it’s not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.
Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.
