Trump aide writes off abortion comments as 'a complete misspeak'

A spokeswoman for Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump says the candidate misspoke a day earlier when he called for punishment for women who get abortions.

"It was a complete misspeak during a conversation over a hypothetical concept and there was a clarification issued," Katrina Pierson told CNN on Thursday morning.

Pierson said Trump is pro-life with exceptions and does not support punishing women for having abortions. Asked whether the businessman wants abortion to be banned nationwide, Pierson demurred.

"This is a state issue, that's the point here, these are states' issues," she said.

Trump drew controversy Wednesday for saying women should be punished for having illegal abortions, a comment that sparked backlash from both Democrat and Republican presidential candidates.

He’s a little too late to do the right thing now.

Spare me the fake outrage.

You ought to listen to Glenn Beck wringing his hands about how mean Trump is to women on his show today...

The key thing is: it should be a state issue.

You want Roe v Wade overturned? That means you agree with Trump’s basic position: this should be a state issue.

Even with his misspeak though he was positioning himself as pro-life, it is just obvious this is not his issue. He is strongest on Islamic Conquests...

I find it very hard to believe Trump would say anything one day and then contradict himself later...

I really liked his questioning of “catholic chris”. How can you be a catholic yet support abortion? Hypocrite. Then Chrissy quotes the bible as a response....godless lib.

Unnamed sources have learned Trump plans to sue himself.

“Right thing”??

Why should someone be excused from violating the law?

I have heard that question asked before.

It is a question designed to trip up pro-lifers in that it suggests that a law preventing abortionists from plying their trade would drive women to “back alley” coat hanger abortionists, etc., and as such, targets women.

Time for Trump to get his

Publish his next position paper on the role of govt, Federal and state

Address the 3rd rail issues like abortion and marriage in writing (most of which state vs federal role) and express his position

Then stick to it

I like how Cruz said last night that he would run over Trump with his car and nobody says anything about it. If Trump said that it would be headline news all day “TRUMP ADVOCATES MURDER”.

Did he misspeak about what he thinks the functions of the federal government should be also?

If the law is that abortion is illegal, of course, anyone participating in the breaking the law is a criminal. So simple. The same applies for illegal aliens, or any other lawbreakers.

Well stated on the Cruz car “ joke”

It’s MSM entertainment, therefore quite presidential to advocate violence in one setting and then denounce it in another

It is a question designed to trip up pro-lifers...

Works every time, like shooting fish in a barrel.

One would think GOP candidates would've figured this out by now. Instead they keep blundering right into it. We can add Trump's name to the long list of otherwise good candidates who have came out looking like idiots trying to kiss the pro-life ring over an issue that most Americans consistently rank near the bottom of things they give a crap about.
