You make my point for me. If they had just said, “Look its the Enquirer” and then ignored it, this would have been blown off. That is not what they did. The Cruz campaign chose to turn this into a massive big deal, and now they are paying the price.
I think that the problem is that they knew the scandal was coming months ahead of time and had time to come up with grandiose plans... like trying to drag Trump into it when everyone now knows that it was Rubio and the GOPe who had been trying like hell to get the story out. After all the publicity it is hard to even imagine the number of Enquirers which are going to be flying off of supermarket shelves this coming week. How many issues were they able to drag out the Edward’s implosion through? Like a years worth!
The Enquirer has a pattern; first they put out a teaser which is short on facts. If they get a big reaction they start dribbling facts out week after week. This is how they sell tens and hundred of millions of issues using a single story. Unless someone else scoops them and releases it all at once, the Enquirer will now keep this story alive for as long as possible.

Don’t answer the question and it appears to some that he is hiding something, or answer and you are legitimizing the accusation, thereby encouraging more outlandish and silly accusations that political enemies demand an answer to.
Answer with a curt “no” and move on, but reporters will not move on, they will come back over and over with “Well, the NE now says such-and-such. . .” It never ends.
There is no correct way.
NE is a tabloid, full of swill that old ladies in check-out lines read for “news.”

Yes, but it is an exceptionally, exceptionally rare occurrence. When it comes to the NE, the saying that even a blind squirrel occasionally finds an acorn is so very true.
Standard for “proof” with NR should be extraordinary high because of their known nature and past spectacular failures and made-up nonsense.
