oops, she still has to use anti-rejection drugs.

...

Maybe they can work on making the islet cells from adult stem cells.

My spouse has been an insulin injection diabetic for 40 years. She has recently undergone a thirty day intervention and no longer injects insulin.

Tell us more about that intervention, please.

I agree with others, BIG DIABETES will never permit a cure to take hold - too many incomes depend on it. No different than BIG CANCER.

This won’t work for type II diabetes.

Only curtailing sugar and refined carb consumption will do that.

Wouldn’t that be for Type II and not Type I?

Making the islet cells from adult stem cells will not make a difference. In Type I, the body’s immune system is programmed to kill islet cells, so any new cells will be quickly killed unless the immune system is suppressed or a physical barrier at the cellular level is present. There are two possible avenues for a permanent cure:

1. “Reset” the immune system by destroying the bone marrow, then introducing marrow stem cells that are not programmed to attack islet cells.

2. Encapsulate the islet cells in a permeable capsule that allows fluid exchange with the bloodstream without allowing white blood cells to attack the islet cells within.

There has been some progress in both of these approaches, but a cure is still a long way off. Sadly, there are no quick and easy fixes for autoimmune diseases.

Alternatively, demonstrate that it has 10% efficacy against AIDS and it will be approved tomorrow.

Sad but true ... the FDA approved Guardasil and RU-486 for political reasons.... and both are deadly.

I have no complaints, thank you! Well, okay, the traffic is annoying and it could be warmer ... I'm a lizard and like it 80 plus always. And the reason I moved here is pretty fabulous too.

How are you doing yourself? :)

One can imagine the anti-rejection drugs are not exactly a backyard party, either.
Curious to see how scientists can perhaps "mask" the insulin-producing cells so anti-rejection therapy is not needed.
These kinds of advancements would be a blessing to members of my family. Keep at it, scientists!
