Gun rights advocates want to be able to bring their firearms under Ohios open carry laws to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
A Change.org petition started Monday by Americans for Responsible Open Carry calls out the Republican National Committee while pushing the Quicken Loans Arena to reverse their policy on firearms carry on their property for the event. Cleveland, Ohio is consistently ranked as one of the top ten most dangerous cities in America, reads the petition that is pushing 10,000 signatures just days after it began. By forcing attendees to leave their firearms at home, the RNC and Quicken Loans Arena are putting tens of thousands of people at risk both inside and outside of the convention site.
The petition also calls on the three current GOP front-runners, businessman Donald Trump, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, to back up their stance on the Second Amendment with action.

Think about it....allowing firearms into a convention that is likely to be emotionally-charged, and where the possibility exists where the voice of the people may be ignored. Say that the GOPe does indeed find a way to ignore what the voters want...say one of those 'angry people' decide that "enough is enough", draws his or her firearm, and does something egregiously stupid. Chaos erupts and the Democrats sit back and laugh.
Does this make any kind of sense?
You are giving the standard anti-gun creed.
Either you trust the people or you must work for the government
No sense at all. Can the Secret Service can protect the Pres/VP nominees effectively? At minimum, would make their job much harder.
Like you posted, a kook left winger/RINO/blogger-journOlist gets in to the event and causes trouble? And of course the MSM blames the GOP and right-wing gun fanatics.
I do not know Ohio’s laws, but I assume that like Arizona, the owner of the facility can decide if they want to allow the citizens to exercise their 2nd Amendment right. Is Quicken Loans Arena owned by Quicken Loans or is it a government owned facility?
If owned by Quicken Loans, pressure can be applied to them by refusing to do business with them.
If it is Government owned, They decide and there ain’t much that can be done.
Remember, WE vote - They Decide.
Yes it makes perfect sense since the ones who are violent do not do so where they know victims can shoot back.
I'm guessing there won't be too much hanky panky taking place in front a large and well armed group of slightly aggravated voters.
But then there is the stupid factor.
:-)
Must see t.v. heh.
Well if anyone decides to start shooting they won’t get off more than a few bullets before they are taken out. I don’t think it will erupt in chaos, in fact it may clean the party out of the Democrat operatives who are OBVIOUSLY posing as Republicans. If some of them demand a Democrat operative like Paul Ryan to be the nominee, the people will not stand for that, these Democrats will have exposed themselves as Democrat operatives and it may in fact get them ejected from the building never mind the party which should have happened a long time ago.
Ohio is an open carry state. It makes as much sense to OC in the convention as it would anywhere.
Or someone tosses a pack of firecrackers or a flash/bang.
Still, one must admit, a rather funny and effective bit of political trickery; there must be some way to repay in kind :-)
I am PRO-GUN. I am PRO-2A. And no, I don’t work for the government, but I also don’t trust everyone.
With the things I’ve heard....and even seen right here on FR...people are talking about revolution. I’ll grant you that a revolution is needed. But this idea just doesn’t sit well with me.
Can you GUARANTEE that every person who carries in the Convention will be emotionally stable enough NOT to do something dumb IF the GOPe does something equally stupid?
Vet the Rinos....might take a while....up to 7 days after the convention to find out if they have all been cleared.
Perhaps an IRS audit as well....
:-)
This is an idiotic idea.
The single, sole, all important overriding purpose of the convention is to nominate a candidate who will defeat Hillary or whomever in November. It is not a showplace for guns or even the ego-driven exercise of rights.
Remember, we do not decide elections. Nor do the hard left. Elections are decided by the middle 12- 18 of voters who swing either way.
Anyone who would want open carry is already voting NOT voting for Hillary. It would get us no additional votes.
Worse, it would scare the middle-ground swing voters. They may not be anti-gun, but open carry is frightening to them. Let’s not scare them off.
PS, no I do not work for the government, nor do I trust ALL the people.
Do you want radical jihadists in the streets near the Convention exercising their “constitutional rights?”
4 years ago Tampa went smoothly. The lib mayor in Tampa tried to ban CCW in the secure Tampa downtown area. Gov. Rick Scott said no. I was there. It was only the keys convention buildings that prohibited carrying. I walked the streets and hotels CCW without anyone stopping me. Even the hallways and lobby of the hotel Romney stayed in was fine for CCW. They were searching and scanning vehicles inside and underneath for devices, but never scanned me or my pockets, just the vehicle I drove in.
This is a creative Democrat dirty trick designed to make Republicans look bad. We just have many too dense to get it. It would make the secret service’s job impossible.
>>Elections are decided by the middle 12- 18 of voters who swing either way.
In other words, our leadership is determined by the stupidest people in our nation who are still trying to decide if they want the R or the D.
CCW holders are more law-abiding than police and prosecutors, but don’t let facts stand in the way of your concern-trolling, Mr. Alinsky.
“An armed society is a polite society.” - Robert A. Heinlein
As Robert A Heinlein said, “an armed society is a polite society”.
I went on the GOP site and tried to vote for Donald Trump on the straw poll. It kept saying they had an error. After many tries, I decided to just put Kasich’s name ~ just to see what would happen ~ and I got through immediately and got my “special prize!!!!” I’m getting a little frustrated with my “folks.”
I think it is the uncontrolled street that is prompting this.
