Donald Trumps controversial attacks on Heidi Cruz are spotlighting what could be one of his biggest vulnerabilities in the general election: his poll numbers with women.
The GOP front-runner has faced accusations of sexism throughout the presidential race, with members of both parties denouncing remarks he has made about Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly and former GOP presidential candidate Carly Fiorina.
Surveys suggest the controversies have taken a toll. A new CNN poll released Thursday, taken before the spat with rival Ted Cruz over his wife, found that 73 percent of registered female voters in the United States had an unfavorable view of Trump. Thats in line with a Reuters poll from last week that found more than half of American women hold a very unfavorable view of the billionaire.
That gives him a huge number of voters he has to make up from somewhere, said American University political science professor Karen OConnor. And I dont know where they will come from.
Opposition to Trump among women also extends to the GOP. A recent NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found that 47 percent of Republican women could not see themselves supporting Trump, a number significantly higher than for any other GOP candidate.
It further highlights the calamity that a Donald Trump nomination would be, said Doug Heye, a former Republican National Committee aide who opposes Trump.
While Republicans in the past have cried foul, rightly so, about Democrats talking about a war on women Donald Trump has personally waged a war on women for decades.
The latest controversy to stir talk of sexism flared Thursday, when Trump retweeted a picture of his wife, Melania Trump, and the wife of his main rival in the GOP race, Ted Cruz.

I don’t see the problem. Donald is obviously proud of his wife, her looks, and her accomplishments. Perhaps Ted is proud of his wife too although there is an issue or two to be concerned about with her.
People get their panties all twisted way too easy these days IMHO.
And Hillary does not?!? Heck most men can’t even imagining voting for someone who sounds like a screeching ex-wife. Imagine listening to that for 8 years?!? Good Lord in heaven above forbid...
Sanders Cruz Clinton totally get free ride with Trump 24/7 carpet coverage.
Stories like this are looking pretty stupid about now
Today and here on will be interesting
let me understand this correctly.
Attack Melania - women love Trump
Attack Heidi - women hate Trump.
A man defending his own wife is wrong.
As I see it, Melania has been attacked a lot worse than Heidi.
Attacking your opponents wife in the same disgusting manner that they attacked yours is wrong and lowers yourself to their level. Which is what Trump lives for.
How exactly did Trump attack Heidi?
Exposing the truth is wrong?
One can easily turn that around and ask how Cruz attacked Melania? Exposing the truth is wrong?
Both sides used pictures of their opponent's wives to attack the other. Both are wrong.
That gives him a huge number of voters he has to make up from somewhere, said American University political science professor Karen OConnor. And I dont know where they will come from.
Is the alt-right large enough to pull Trump over the finish line?
Beats me, I have no idea. I also have no desire to be associated with him or them.
Being a woman I consider this as crap, tabloid crap. Let’s consider the real issues at hand, like terrorism.
hmm.
Oh, I see now. No one has ever seen Hyde’s real face. Trump exposed it.
And the super pac exposed Melania's...almost everything.
He didn’t expose anything about Heidi Cruz, just implied he knew something damaging or unflattering
Seems like a warning shot across the bow, not a broadside
So do you have a daily minimum of anti-trump threads you have to post to get your fee or do you get paid per thread?
Interesting how Bill Clinton can treat women the way he did, and yet get women’s votes, but Trump is somehow a pariah?
My wife likes Trump’s ideas but his personal attacks on other candidates turns her off.
