Newt Gingrich Is Bullish on Donald Trump
Slate ^ | 3/23/16 | Isaac Chotiner

Posted on 03/23/2016 8:46:37 PM PDT by tatown

So why are Trump’s negatives so high, if he is giving a voice to the masses?

Look, Trump has been campaigning in a Republican primary with harsh language and has been routinely attacked by the elite media as much as they can. Reagan went through the same cycle. Do you know how many points Reagan was behind Carter in March?

It was double digits, right?

Twenty-five. Not just double digits. Twenty-five points. So if you had talked to me in March of 1980, you would have said, “How can I support this crazy right-winger who makes movies with chimpanzees and is 25 points behind Carter?” And I would have said, “Because I think he can win.” Which, by the way, he did.

Is there really nothing that worries you about this guy? The way he deals with reporters, his campaign manager, etc.? You are not at all worried he has authoritarian tendencies?

No. No. [Laughs.] Which part of that is supposed to bother me?

That his campaign manager may have assaulted a reporter?

Oh c’mon. Did you ever look at it?

I have looked at it, many times.

That’s an assault?

He grabbed her arm very hard.

” hope Trump picks a black person, to be honest. A black, lesbian woman. To shut up all the cucks once and for all.

Trump/Rice 2016”

Don’t hold your breath. Last week, I had a discussion with a Trump Supporter and Stanford Grad. He was at a meeting last year, and Rice was there as an attendee, not as a speaker. She was asked that question, and she said no thank you. No more politics for her.

NEWT BALANCED THE FEDERAL BUDGET!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn right...and forced Clinton to get on board with welfare reform, kicking and screaming all the way. Until it worked and he then stood up and took all the credit! What Newt accomplished in that Congress was phenomenal and should be respected by everyone of FR.

So he made that stupid commercial with Nancy Pelosi. Get over it. One lapse of judgement is not nearly enough to erase the man's lifetime of service and achievement. I love and respect the guy and I'm thrilled he's on board with Trump. Or at least NOT on board with the #NeverTrump assholes!

“Newt would be perfect for Chief of Staff in a Trump White House His knowedge of what make the government work, who’s who, who’s done what, where the bodies are buried, etc. exceeds any other mortal. The position is far more engaged than VP!”

No, no, nooo...

Rice is as much of a jerk as Colon Bowel. When will we ever get over the asinine (and racist) idea of having to put up with stupid people just because they’re black?

“Let me encourage other members of the establishment: Keep supporting Donald Trump because every time you do it, what it is doing is telling conservatives all over the country is where you stand and who stands with you”. - Ted Cruz, New Hampshire stump speech

Spoken by the guy who is supported by:

Mitt Romney
Jeb Bush
Neil Bush
The entire Jeb policy team
Lindsey Graham

Talk about your hypocrites!

As the search for a running mate for Trump goes on, I think your suggestion that he should consider Gingrich is actually a very good idea!

Maybe but I can see Newt as Chief of Staff being a better fit. What would be tons more fun would be Newt as Press Secretary. I can well imagine his pressers being the hottest ticket in town!

Loved when the reporter asked about Krystol and Krauthammer, Newt said they needed to go on vacation. I agree!

{So why are you bashing people with Ph.D.s?

Because I have been in the real world, doing real things, and I understand the limitations of academic knowledge. I think it’s greatly overrated.

Well, people are suffering.

People are suffering everywhere. How about everybody in Darfur? Should they all come to Miami? The suffering thing is liberal tripe. It is nonsense.

Is your job, as a politician, to merely follow the American people?

I am applying the Buckley principle to the Washington intellectuals. They are inbred, they talk to each other, they are treating the American people with contempt. Forget Trump. Seventy percent of Republicans between Trump, Carson, and Cruz have repudiated their world. And they are saying, “Boy, these people are really hicks. They are so stupid they have been taken in.” Well maybe, just maybe, those American people know something the guys in Washington don’t, and frankly, I am on the side of the American people, not the Washington intellectuals.

You must know a lot of people in Washington like Kristol and Krauthammer and George Will who are horrified by Trump. This isn’t just liberal angst.

I think a number of them need to go on vacation.}

I like this new Newt.

He was one of the first ones to bash Trump, but he’s seen the light - he either has studied why Trump is so popular and gets it or just wants to remain relevant.

He’s not an establishment-type backing a candidate like Jeb backing Cruz - Newt gets why people are so angry and does a great job defending Trump from idiot reporters who make big deals about stupid things.

I read the interview, thinking I was wasting my time, and came away impressed.

“(Hint: when you think “alpha male” Cruz is NOT the first name that comes to mind.)”

The video of Trump heading toward the ‘protestor’ coming on the stage, and the secret service holding him back DOES come to mind!

Perfect summary of the interview. I get so annoyed with reporters, because they obviously have a biased agenda and the only point of any interview is to put forth their opinion. FINALLY, we have a candidate that doesn’t let them do that. And Mr. Newt did awesome as well. (I’m adding back the Mr. after this masterful interview)

So why are Trump’s negatives so high, if he is giving a voice to the masses?

Isaac Chotiner, I'm going out on a limb here, but could it have something to do with Democrats targeting Trump, the GOP targeting him, every newspaper in the country expressing hatred for Trump, every network including FOX gunning for him? AND millions and millions of ads run against him since the start of the primaries by both democrats and Republicans?

Could any of that effected his negatives?

>>”Actually, if you’ll check the archives, I think you’ll find that Gingrich was a big favorite on Free Republic at the point of his surge during the campaign against Romney.”

I like Newt on some issues, but I also recall many pictures here with him and Nancy Pelosi sitting on a bench for Climate Change.... People here ripped him for that and rightfully so. For many, that’s a deal breaker no matter who he endorses.

But the point is, endorsements don’t matter that much to some. Politicians will get support from many different sources - doesn’t mean they agree with anyone who endorses them. Some are helpful, some detract from the message - but that’s something no candidate can control and shouldn’t imo.

>>”He also has weaknesses, but who doesn’t?”

Many would say “Trump”.

>>How is that voting for the non establishment guy who never lies working for you now.

I’m voting for the most conservative guy - establishment or not. And that’s working fine. But I’ll vote for whomever is the nominee. Can you say the same? If not, you may as well vote for Hillary.
