Case of deadly robbery outside high school moves forward (thug shoots himself, dies)

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – A Chesapeake man accused in a robbery that turned deadly for one of the suspects will go to trial.

Javonte Jones was in court Wednesday, where a female victim testified about what happened last fall in the parking lot of Western Branch High School.

She held up her hand to show the judge the scars from the shooting and said she now has nerve damage. She said she wanted to sell some clothing accessories to a man she knew as “Tae” — Javonte Jones. She said she talked to Jones on a website similar to Craigslist called Offer Up and then started texting with him.

The night of the meet up she said Jones was with another man. When her back was turned, the woman said she felt a gun pushed into her, and asked “Are you serious?” She said Jones replied “Yes,” though it was the other man who had the gun. After a struggle, she said she grabbed the muzzle of the gun. Then, she said Jones told the other man, “Just f-ing shoot her,” and the man pulled the trigger and shot her in the hand.

According to court documents, a bullet struck the other man in the chest. He has been identified as Traymon Richardson. The woman said the gun fell into her car and the two men ran off as she headed for the hospital. Richardson later died. Court documents show police determined Jones’ identity using text messages he exchanged with the woman.

Police later arrested Jones, and an officer testified that Jones sped up in his vehicle when police tried to stop him. The Jones and Richardson families declined to comment Wednesday.

A judge certified multiple felony charges, including attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy, and robbery. A date for a jury trial has not been set.
