In the immediate aftermath of the Brussels bombings, Donald Trump mentioned something he likes to talk about -- polls.
"Well first of all, this is a subject that is very near and dear to my heart, because I've been talking about it, certainly much more than anybody else, and it's why I'm probably No. 1 in the polls, because of the fact that I say we have to have strong borders," Trump said Tuesday morning on NBC's Today show.
That was hours after it had become clear that at least a dozen people were killed in the attack on the Belgian capital's transit system and airport. When pressed on what he would do as president in response to such an attack, Trump said he would not allow "certain people to come into this country without absolute perfect documentation."
It was Trump once again turning to protectionism as a way of dealing with the world. Back in December -- following the Paris terrorist attacks and the shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., by a husband-and-wife team sympathetic to ISIS -- Trump proposed a controversial ban on Muslims entering the United States.
Trump has said he would "bomb the s***" out of ISIS, but he also flirted with isolationism Monday in a trip to Washington, D.C. In an editorial board meeting with the Washington Post, he questioned whether the U.S. should continue to be involved with NATO, the military alliance formed almost 70 years ago as a way to respond to the potential threat posed by the former Soviet Union. NATO is headquartered in Brussels.
Though Trump has a selective reading of polls -- ones he likes, he trumpets, ones he doesn't, he ignores -- he's certainly No. 1 in the GOP primary....

Donald Trump Finds New City to Insult: Brussels

LONDON He incensed Paris and London by saying that some of their neighborhoods were so overrun with radicals that the police were too scared to enter.
He raised Scottish tempers by threatening to pull the plug on his investments there, including his luxury golf courses, if British politicians barred him from entering Britain.
Now, Donald J. Trump has upset the already beleaguered people of Belgium, calling its capital, Brussels, a hellhole.
Asked by the Fox Business Network anchor Maria Bartiromo about the feasibility of his proposal to bar foreign Muslims from entering the United States, Mr. Trump argued that Belgium and France had been blighted by the failure of Muslims in these countries to integrate.
There is something going on, Maria, he said. Go to Brussels. Go to Paris. Go to different places. There is something going on and its not good, where they want Shariah law, where they want this, where they want things that you know, there has to be some assimilation. There is no assimilation. There is something bad going on.
Warming to his theme, he added that Brussels was in a particularly dire state. You go to Brussels I was in Brussels a long time ago, 20 years ago, so beautiful, everything is so beautiful its like living in a hellhole right now, Mr. Trump continued.

The Islamic State released photos of jihadists handing out candy in occupied Syria to celebrate the terrorist attacks in Brussels.
ISIS claimed responsibility earlier in the day for twin morning blasts that hit Zaventem airport and a later explosion at Maelbeek metro station.
The official statement on ISIS letterhead in French and Arabic noted "a secret cell of the soldiers of the Caliphate" targeted "places chosen with precision" in Brussels.
ISIS promised the "Crusader states" even more "dark days in response to their aggression against our state. And what awaits you will be harder and more bitter, with the permission of Allah."
Similarly, ISIS distributed photos after the November Paris attacks of jihadists handing out candy in Sirte, Libya, the occupied hometown of late dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
