Montana Republicans are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to step in as early as this week and force the state to close its upcoming primary so only GOP voters can participate -- in a case that could pose complications for Donald Trump.
The Republican front-runner so far has done better in "open" primaries, where members of both parties can vote, than in "closed" primaries limited to Republican voters only.
Montana, set to vote June 7, has had an open primary since 1912.
But state GOP officials want to change all that, in a bid to keep out Democrats and other cross-over voters who might sway the outcome. They argue keeping the primaries open infringes on their constitutional right of association.
This is a First Amendment right, state Republican Party lawyer Matthew Monforton told FoxNews.com.
He said the looming primary is particularly important because it would allow people to flood the system in an incredibly close Republican race. If the system is left unchecked, Monforton believes outside groups could unfairly influence the states winner-take-all primaries, where Montanas 27 presidential delegates are up for grabs.

Trump is such a threat to the whole Uniparty. I did not realize just how deep the imbedding had become. The fact that they have drawn Cruz into their orbit is terrifying.
I really had respect for Cruz but he either joined or was given no alternative but to join them.
WOW Red Steel, I hope you are right about CA. if we take AZ. I will have ALOT of hope for CA.
Why nothing for New Mexico reasoning???
They have better things to do than listen to whiny GOP thugs who they hate.
Really?
Thanks. There is hope but the GOPe is now already onto Plan-C which is pressuring his delegates into voting for someone else.
No reason other than for demonstration purposes. NM is a proportional primary state that Trump will get his delegates.
There were close to 50,000 people in PA. REREGISTERED from DEM to REPUB. IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS!!!
Red Steel are we done with caucuses???
The GOPee have run the same spreadsheet scenarios. They know damn well they don’t have much of any chance at stopping Trump. Unless they got the balls to cheat state after state after state... which is too risky too many people involved. They got a better chance at getting struck by lightening and winning the lottery simultaneously.
Plan-D is running a third party candidate that a few of them are contemplating. The GOPe clowns are all sucking wind here.
I would expect that region is where almost all of Cruz’s winning states will be between now and the end.
I predicted 40 Trump states and 10 cruz states.
No, at least 2 caucus states left to allocate their delegates CO and ND.
Start the game as 9-ball, then, in the middle of the rack, change the game to 8-ball because the shooter has a dead-bang combo on the 9?
Yeah, that’s fair.
It’s not one more principle out the window. But it is good to see the snakes that make the rules get bitten for a change.
May those open primaries that the GOPee has forced on us for years, to get their commie/cronies into office, put an end to them. Remember Mississippi.
They tried that against Reagan. The third party is likely to steal votes from Hilary.
Mississippi was not about an open primary. It was about Cochrane running 3rd party after losing to a Tea Party guy in the primary.
It was about a race=baiting campaign to get dems to vote for Cochrane since the dem candidate had no chance anyway.
Totally different ballgame.
BTW, I am a TRrump supporter who believes primaries should not be open; but if you start the campaign with open primaries, then that’s the way they have to stay until next time.
WOW
No, there's very little you get.
There are Republican primary campaigns at some level in Montana and all states all the time, with campaigns starting at any point during any year. It's a continuing process.
The "competition" starts when the polls open. There is no other logical starting point.
To say that there is some other "starting point" is utterly stupid.
