Digital First Media will be the next owner of The Orange County Register and The Press-Enterprise, a bankruptcy judge ruled Monday.

U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Mark Wallace approved a request from Freedom Communications to approve the newspaper company’s sale to Digital First Media, the second-highest bidder in last week’s newspaper auction, a deal worth around $52 million to creditors. None of the major players objected to the deal.

Digital First Media, the nation’s second-largest newspaper company by circulation, won after the auction’s top bid by Chicago-based Tribune Publishing, owner of the Los Angeles Times, ran into antitrust problems. Digital First – with 65 daily and Sunday newspapers and at least 265 websites in 18 states – owns the Long Beach Press-Telegram, Los Angeles Daily News and seven other Southern California newspapers.

Good. I like this much better than having the LA Times take over the Register.

We might have a chance at having something more than the LA Times party line for news in SoCal.

“We are honored to uphold the values of local journalism, and we look forward to working with award-winning news teams who have dedicated their careers to informing the public about the issues that matter most,” Hasse said in a statement. “We are also excited about providing advertisers a broader platform from which to deliver their messages.”

That sounds promising. Now let’s see if they live up to it or take the politically correct route.
