Upstate town board votes against reciting Pledge of Allegiance

The planning board for the upstate town of New Paltz has voted against saying the Pledge of Allegiance at its meetings after one of its members called it a “total waste of time.”

The showdown over the Pledge came at Monday’s session, when board member Amy Cohen introduced a motion to say the patriotic oath at future bi-monthly meetings as a show of respect.

Cohen, a local business owner and former mayoral candidate, said she’d been contacted by several veterans and “many community members” with the suggestion.

“This is a government building, we have a flag here,” Cohen told fellow board members. “Personally, coming in off the street to do our governance . . . I feel that it helps me kind of transition.”

But when objections were raised, the motion was voted down 4-3.

“To me, it’s a total waste of time,” said Vice Chair Lyle Nolan.

“It’s a pressure type of thing, because if you don’t stand, it looks like you’re against it and I don’t think we need that. We’re all adults. We’re all here to do a job,” Nolan added, before voting no.

Board member Lagusta Yearwood also spoke out against the oath, calling it a “funny little thing.”

New Putz is like San Fran-on-the Hudson. It's a haven for artsy fartsy types and LGBT/FUBARs, not to mention home to an ultra liberal diploma mill (SUNY New Paltz) and an "unofficial" sanctuary city. Appalling, but from this town it really comes as no surprise.

How much time does it take out of a board meeting? Like 20 seconds?

They should have all federal funding, grants and monies stopped until the Pledge is restored.
Jeez, even my 4 year old grandson knows and recites the American Pledge of Allegiance.

how many times must someone of honor pledge allegiance?

i pledge to honor and obey the constitution of these great united states and fight all enemies foreign and domestic.

just because i do not want to pledge to a flag in front of a bunch of folks who are just paying lip service doesn’t make them more of a patriot than me.

New Paltz looks to be “upstate” only because it’s not actually connected to NYC. I get that anything that’s not actually “The City” is considered “upstate” in NY, but really to me you’re not “upstate” until you’re at least 15-20 miles North and/or West of Albany.

Restored?

They haven’t been saying it at all.

It’s a planning board, what did you expect? Just let people build what and where they want to.

Ha! We used to stop in New Paltz for growlers of chocolate port on our way up to the Shawangunk Mountains. Lots of great rock climbing in that area.

Exactly, my first reaction as well. It is a matter of context.

The Pledge is to the larger government; board members as agents of the governed take and spend money from that larger government. The governed have a continuing interest in knowing the board intends to proceed in compliance with the government
