Is defeat probable for GOP if Reagan wins nomination?
The Christian Science Monitor ^ | March 5, 1980 | Richard J. Cattani

Posted on 03/19/2016 10:44:06 PM PDT by monkapotamus

The nation's Republicans are working against the clock to answer two key questions: Can conservative Ronald Reagan possibly attract enough independent and Democratic votes to win in November?

"Reagan is the opponent of choice for Carter," says I. A. Lewis, director of the Los Angeles Times Poll, a point on which most analysts agree. "But Reagan can reach across and cause mischief in the Democratic constituency," Mr. Lewis says. "Reagan appeals to blue collar, working-class voters. He can win Democratic votes..."

Given the foregoing, perhaps Reagan’s civility wouldn’t work against the PC-Fascist left-wingers and Trump’s low-class New York bully persona is what we need to break up the left-wing socioeconomic FASCISM so rampant in our country.

That is my working theory at the moment. The protesters in Chicago/Arizona/New York/all over the world are not reacting to Trump, Trump preemptively reacted to them and overcame the media taboos (like PC) with what will be necessary to come up against them and take back our country. They will not go quietly, and this way we see their true face and what the enemy really is and how much we have accommodated them in our country for so long now.

If this is instinctual, this is brilliance. If this is articulated strategy, this is brilliance. How better to show a bunch of hating people protesting about hate? How better to show a bunch of bigoted people protesting about bigotry? All right no our TV screen.

Remember there were no conservative news out lets or internet

Just ABC NBC CBS

They rigged the polls till the last week of the election (or people lied)

Same thing happening a failed President….. Carter

The anger then was silent

No big rallies like Trump is having

Your theory simply isn’t supported by the polls nor the vote tallies

Trump is not as polite as Reagan. What both men have in common is that they live this country and want it to be a great and enduring republic

To me, Carter wasn’t likeable. Morally arrogant and preachy in office, bitter and vindictive in defeat, to this day.

I offer his “malaise speech” (`what’s wrong with you people?’) and his many shenanigans against Israel, and rest my case.

Y’all are demented. Trump ain’t Reagan. Reagan had been studying and speaking about the issues for over 20 years. He was a wise and learned man who could connect with people with reason. Trump is a know-nothing fool who can only insult those who disagree with whatever it is he is spouting out today, often different than what he said recently.

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, The Donald is practically Reagan’s clone and this is deja vu all over again. /s

Nobody is saying that Trump is another Reagan. What is being said that Trump is being TREATED the same way Reagan was treated.

Any of us that lived through that time saw it from the very beginning. In the 1976 primary, Reagan was treated horribly and it didn't change in 1980. His own party called him names and forced Bush on him at the convention.

Open you eyes to what is really going on and don't just play party politics.

Oh yes. You and I remember the same thing. They called him a lunatic, dangerous, will start WW3 blah, blah, BLAH.

Let's not forget that they said something like, "The monkey would make a better president" or "Reagan was upstaged by a monkey". They made a lot of negative references to Bedtime for Bonzo.

Carter was like able and wasn’t a criminal

We thought Carter was "likeable". But, in reality, he was a small-minded, petty, little jerk.

God, I hope to hell we don’t nominate Reagan, he will GET CRUSHED by Carter in November.

Reagan is simply UNELECTABLE, a TOTAL IDIOT, his negatives are THROUGH THE ROOF.

Reagan is the DREAM CANDIDATE for the Democrats. There is so much out there for them to ATTACK HIM with, in fact just his HATE-FILLED statements on the (Berlin) Wall alone are enough to DISQUALIFY HIM.

HE MUST BE STOPPED, or once again, REPUBLICANS WILL BE HUMILIATED.

But I know COOLER HEADS will prevail, and Gerald R. Romney will will step-in and take the nomination, and prevent us from a LANDSLIDE DEFEAT. Or my personal favorite, HOWARD BAKER, now that’s a man who’s name even excites the masses to GO OUT AND VOTE!

(it’s as if 1980 never happened)

Your memory is flawed. Reagan was loathed and mocked by people just like you. They accused him of being rude, stupid, fake, you name it. Reagan implied Ford was brain damaged in 1976 when he said “I played football too - the difference is, I wore a helmet”. Everyone was outraged. He called reporters liars, he used an angry tone, he said protesters in Sacramento “had hair like Tarzan, walked like Jane, and smelled like Cheetah”. He called the Russians and Red Chinese “evil” and joked about bombs.

This directness was seen by many as aggressive, hostile and reckless. His behavior was initially met with anger and contempt from the left and the establishment right. After a few years when people saw he was not a war monger, he was regarded as an amiable dunce. Several more years later when the economy improved, some other critics began to soften.

History has been kind to Reagan, and he deserves that retrospective respect. He had some loyal fans like you and me that loved him from the get go, but he was not initially respected as a wise avuncular gentleman. His world view was confrontational and simplistic, his economic views were “voodoo economics”.

I am not one of the people saying Trump is the new Reagan. Obviously they are completely different people. But Reagan was not always so well regarded, except by those of us who always loved him. In fact, I am pleasantly surprised at how well history has treated Reagan. Back then, admitting you liked Reagan in most social groups was risky as it is today admitting you are a Trump supporter. People automatically think you must be stupid.

“Keep you’re beliefs ...”

The second word is a great indicator of what is wrong with this country.

Comparing a clown like Donald Trump to Ronald Reagan comes perilously close to blasphemy.

Trump is a blowhard. Always boasting. I wish he would lay off the ego stuff and take a page out of the Reagan book.

I see Donald Trump as a very humble man. People say the same things about Rush Limbaugh, too but again he is a very humble man.

What we learn is the establishment never changes their mantra they don’t have too because the sheeples are bamboozled by the media. Reagan won a landslide and Trump is on the same path. This is an insurgency as was Reagan’s and it’s about time it happened again!
