In February of 2015, it became legal to grow and consume marijuana in Alaska. And, as has happened in Denver and Seattle, crime immediately began to increase after being stable or declining in the pre-legal pot era.
According to the FBI's Preliminary Semiannual Uniform Crime Report for the first six months of 2015, the number of violent crimes in Anchorage (the only city reporting for Alaska) increased 34% compared to the same period in 2014. Murders were up 167%, and aggravated assaults increased 32% versus the first six months of 2014.

Reefer madness? What’s in your smoke?
Murders up 167%, and it’s all because of pot?
Doesn’t sound right to me.
Do ya suppose it’s due to the crap economy [unrelated to pot], or just to get money for pot? Seems #2 is less likely, as those who wanted weed just got it from their friendly neighborhood Dealer McDope already. Hmmmf.
The potheads of FR are not going to like this.
Who says the economy got worse in the last year?
We see them come.
We see them go.
Some are fast.
And some are slow.
Some are high
And some are low.
Not one of them
Is like another.
Dont ask us why.
Go ask your mother.
Murders are up in cities all across America. Pot has nothing to do with it.
YEP .... agree !
Oil rig layoff, cabin fever, etc ....
Refugees?
It isn’t.
167% is a huge number, anywhere.
The 0’conomy? Lotsa people here last I read. Maybe not in Alaska, seems busy up there. I’m retired, and out of the hunt and the info stream. TG!
Yah ... WTH?
Stoners I’ve met (as a bouncer) seem lots more docile than drunks...
this article doesn’t add up.
Certain places will become sanctuaries for drug outlaws at every level. But on the principle of “don’t foul your nest” one would expect there’d be less crime in such places.
When I feel cooped up in winter here in NW OH, it’s gotta be nothing compared to what happens [not] during Alaska’s long winters.
True be dat !
I’m thinking more guns owned, carried and used in Alaska per than Texas. Now add economy being lower than whale shit in the Marianas Trench, spin in a few months of darkness, chilly weather, cabin fever...... boom !
Weed weenies probably kept the crime rate down to whats reported ....:o)
And here is a table of Alaska crime rates, 1960-2014.

Dave’s not here!
Yeah I was stationed in Fairbanks, Clear and out on Shemya Island during my service career off an on and saved from going batcrap crazy by hunting, fishing, drinking and saving my leave up to go to the lower 48 during the dark...... then there were lots of WAF’s also.
