Republicans Are Surrendering To Donald Trump (Going With The Winner Alert)
Washington Post ^ | 03/17/2016 | Fareed Zakaria

Posted on 03/18/2016 12:46:52 AM PDT by goldstategop

The modern Republican Party has been devoted to free markets and free trade, social conservatism, an expansionist foreign policy and fiscal discipline, especially on entitlements. Remember that the speech that launched Ronald Reagan’s career was an attack on Medicare. On every one of these issues, Trump either openly disagrees or — as with abortion — has a past track record of disagreement.

Over the past decade, Republican support for immigration and free trade has been collapsing. But Trump’s nomination would transform the party into a blue-collar, populist, nationalist movement with a racial element — much like many others in the Western world. This would be a very different party from Reagan’s or Ryan’s.

Donald Trump's ascendancy marks the transformation of the GOP from a conservative into a populist,blue-collar nationalist party. A party vastly different from Reagan's or Ryan's. But that transcends the usual ideological/geographical/class divides in American politics. Not so different from populist parties in Europe but late in coming to America.

"...transcends the usual ideological/geographical/class divides in American politics."

Immediate life and death threats to ones whole existence tends to do that to a sane people.

Go Trump.

vastly different from Reagan's

His vision to make a great economy is largely from Reagan, growth is the key, along with the taking away of government restriction.

He's pro-life, with a conversion, very similar.

He's getting blue collar democrats to vote for him, very similar.

He wants a strong military, very similar. He wants to use that military only to crush an opponent (such as ISIS) if necessary to make the US safe.

Likewise he wants to cut spending in all things but the military.

He wants to gut bamstercare.

He wants people to enjoy being in the US and be proud of their country again, very similar.

Unlike Reagan, he has the will to stop amnesty. So there is that.......

I'd say, this is an entirely wrong premise, and that Trump is on the same wavelength, more than any other candidate. Reagan was great, given the chance Trump may be act II.

“Over the past decade, Republican support for immigration and free trade has been collapsing.”

There is a point of DIMINISHING RETURNS on both.

Without immigration, we’d still be living in wigwams here, and for many (if not most) conservative men that want a traditional marriage, we would not have wives. But even so, flooding the country with THIRD WORLD types that will simply vote DEMOCRAT every chance they get, to the point that we becomes a ONE PARTY STATE strikes conservative voters as both DUMB and DANGEROUS.

Regarding free trade - this conservative was all for it at the beginning, as it was the best way to break the backs of the unions - and it did so quite well, thankfully. But when you see the air pollution over virtually all of Eastern China and over other countries, you realize that was our manufacturing base that has now relocated over there - that was the result.

Now it’s time to say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

But he favors preservation of Social Security and Medicare and extending benefits to blue collar Americans.

If I’m not mistaken the populist Tea Party pushed in much the same direction.

Trump is adamantly against corporate welfare and crony capitalism embraced by the GOP leadership and its rentier donor class.

His views clash starkly with the elitism dominant in upper reaches of the Republican party, which its base strongly rejects.

He seems like the right man at the right time and like an opportunity that might not come along again in our lifetimes if ever.

Cheap shots at Goldwater too. Kennedy was shot a year before that elected - the Republicans could have run Mother Teresa in 1964 and she would have gotten trounced.

...and by the way, Goldwater didn’t do jack to make the South Republican. They supported Eisenhower twice before Goldwater and Nixon twice after, yet the Dems OWNED the South at all levels below the presidency - until Bill Clinton took office and Republicans started winning there in 1994, and even then it took another 20 years for the lock-down to be pretty much completed.

If the Washington Post wants to pay some foreigner to talk about American history, I guess they have that right - but it does look quite silly.

This screed sounds an awful like Levin’s latest tirade last night: a whole lot of nonsense. The hardly great one ranted about the GOPe being the Republican-Whig Party and Trump support as the Progressive-Populist movement, all designed as a weak pro-Cruz statement.

The bottom-line is this: “free” trade has resulted in massive trade deficits and the gutting of US manufacturing. This has left us vulnerable economically, financially and militarily.

Enough. It’s long past time to turn things around.

I would bet Reagan would be against amnesty now after his first mistake.

And the Washington Post considers itself a serious news source.

Trump won the college educated in eight different States too... So, to the Post: I remember when newspapers cared more about telling the truth than pushing a convenient lie. I also remember when newsrooms were flush with reporters and happy customers.. and ‘trust’ was a bigger prize than a Pulitzer... Lots of nostalgia to go around..

“Free Trade” is an ideal, but you need partners who play by those same rules. Instead, we’ve seen 30 years of Unilateral Disarmament in what we should now recognize has been a Trade Cold War.

To be against illegal immigration is now to be against immigration, eh?

Only in the warped, liberal mind.

“The modern Republican Party has been devoted to free markets and free trade, social conservatism, an expansionist foreign policy and fiscal discipline, especially on entitlements”

With a full of baloney statement like that how do you even go deeper with this dolt. The modern GOP is dedicated to allowing the left to slide to Gomorrah but making sure that monied interests get to keep their self-interest goodies while selling out the citizenry. The left gets to buy votes and the GOPe makes sure the few still working get to pay for that.

Ironically, conservatives today are in something of the same position that Republican moderates were in 1964, as Barry Goldwater steamed toward the nomination.

I voted for Goldwater but no pubbie could have won in 1964.

JFK, the then Saint John, was assassinated in November 1963 and when Jackie Kennedy, pictured with her two little children was stumping for LBJ, Honest Abe Lincoln would have lost to him.

The fact the the pubbie establishment was against him didn't help.

Since we are going down memory lane, at this point in 1980, Ronald Reagan, the modern day savior of the USA, was losing 55-38% to jimmah cahtaaaar.

The media called RR the same names as they are now calling Trump and GEORGE WILL DESPISED REAGAN WITH THE SAME HATRED HE HAS FOR TRUMP.

The media feared Reagan and when he became President and told the Airport Controllers that he'd fire them all if they went on strike, they made fun and mocked him.

Reagan fired all 22,000 and they media shit their collective depends.

They hated Reagan even more and they see the same traits in Trump, a man with no fear, and will keep his word...OH NOES...
