Told to reduce his son’s time in the clubhouse, Chicago White Sox first baseman Adam LaRoche took a different path: He said he planned to retire and walk away from a $13 million salary.

The president of the White Sox, Kenny Williams, confirmed Wednesday that he had twice asked LaRoche in the last week to “dial it back” with his 14-year-old son, Drake.

Gave up $13,000,000.....he tweeted out #familyfirst.

I respect both the Sox AND LaRoche.

The kid was at the spring training camp....eight hours a day...seven days a week. I don’t buy off on this but LaRoche is free to do whatever he desires, and this helps some rookie get a slot on the team as they leave and head north.

It is great he wanted his son there, but he is at a work place- if I brought my son to work every day they would not like it

Doesn’t he have WORK to do for $13mil a year? How much attention can he give his son during that time?

He is teaching his son not to respect the workplace. While I can appreciate him giving up the money for his son, something better could have been arranged.

And after he retires, how much time will his son spend in the clubhouse?

Somehow I can’t picture him retiring over this if he hit .270 with 25 bombs last year and not .207 with 12.

He had a BAD year last year and the White Sox were more than happy to see him go. Expensive veteran.

In the cruel world of professional sports, it is all about what have you done for me lately. His 2015 stats were far below his historical numbers. .207 batting average doesn’t justify a $12 Million salary. This Spring (2 weeks now) he is off to an even slower start according to ESPN. He did good at the negotiating table, but when the body gives out, it gives out.

I’m skeptical of his throwing his family under the bus. I admire his commitment to them, but he should man up about his on field performance. Or, rather, his non-performance.

I would think a family intervention specialist - preferably Christian-based - may be able to get them to communicate better. Most things boil down to lack of communication or misreading each other. So where is the wife in all this?

you really believe that?

everyone in the WORKPLACE had to deal with one person who thought him and his child were more important than anything else?

I mean good on him if he walked away from $13mil for his son- OK - I respect him for standing up for his belief.

But some better solution was possible, and he missed the opportunity to teach his son that.

ChiSox are the big winner here. First it's their business and workplace. They set the rules. Secondly they were going to have to pay this stiff $13mm this year. Now nothing. Wow. Winner, winner, chicken dinner. LaRoche is washed up. Last year .207 BA and 12 HR’s. That's a million dollars a HR. Think maybe overpriced.

Goodbye Adam.

One of the networks mentioned that the kid is home-schooled, and that someone on team confirmed that the kid comes in with dad and leaves with dad each day. LaRoche got away with this for almost all of spring training. Team just finally said enough and asked him to ‘dial it back’.

I could see bringing the kid out for a weekend series and letting him hang around the club-house for that weekend.

You’ve got the bottom line!

Almost 500 PA, .207, 12 HR, 44 RBI by a 36-year old 1st baseman is going to get anyone ‘encouraged’ to retire, kid or no kid.

He should demand to be traded to the team across town like Ron Santo did.

If LaRoche had hit .280 last year with 35 home runs the White Sox would be backpedaling faster than Lance Armstrong in the face of a charging rhino.

Have you seen the Cubs lineup? LaRoche wouldn't make ballboy on that team.

Adam played here in DC, his son was always there during pregame workouts shaging flies in the outfield.

I always thought it unprofessional on his part and a distraction to teammates.

It may be why they didn’t bid on his contract.

True, I think our Buccos are going to have more trouble with them than the Cardinals. But they could always send LaRoche to the minors as a player manager.

I'm sure he has enough money stashed away that it would be a fitting career ender.
