After Donald Trump swept four of Tuesdays five state primaries, party bigwigs are set to meet on Thursday to lay out a plan to derail the frontrunners path to the nomination.
According to Politico, the meeting was organized by former Bush administration official Bill Wichterman, conservative activist Erick Erickson, and Bob Fischer, a prominent GOP fundraiser and bundler.
Aside from coordinating efforts to prevent Trumps nomination, conservative activists and party leaders will also mull an option that was unthinkable just half a year ago: breaking with the Republican Party and launching an independent, third party bid for the White House.
The idea of a third party conservative bid was first seriously broached in February when Republican donors called for research into the feasibility of such a scheme.
A memo produced by the conservative polling firm Data Targeting in late February was publicized by Politico, revealing research results indicating that it is possible to mount an independent candidacy, but [it] will require immediate action.
According to exit polls from Tuesdays vote in critical battleground states, a third party run may enjoy wide backing among Republican voters.
A total of 39% of GOP voters in Florida, Illinoi, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio said that they would seriously consider backing a third party if Trump became the nominee. And a full 27% told pollsters that they would never vote for Trump under any circumstances, even if he won the nomination.
While the Republican Party is edging closer to a split, Democratic voters are also expressing frustration with frontrunner Hillary Clinton. According to last weeks NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, 33% of Sanders supporters would never vote for Clinton in a general election.

Flashback:
GOP circulates loyalty pledge to box Trump in
The move is viewed as an attempt to force the front-runner’s hand after his refusal to rule out a third-party bid.

These are not “leaders” these a self promoting fridge group of media buffoons trying desperately to get media attention to their failing shows and websites. There following is in the hundreds. There is no on involved in this with any political weight.
In spirit, as far as the GOPe is concerned, it’s already over.
The way the GOPe thinks of this is that their lifestyle has made it through Dem wins before, but may not make it through a Trump win and administration.
The Bushes and Politico (apparently including the
whining RINO Erickson) want Hillary or Romney-Ryan.
There is no other choice for them.
It’s happened on occasion. At least there would be one conservative alternative for the fall election.
I can’t see the likes of Eric Erickson forming a party that would appeal much to many conservatives. His behavior during this election cycle has bordered on TDS lunacy.
What are they going to call themselves? The ABT party? ( anyone but Trump)
His 3rd party and the Bernie Sanders fringe of the left might give “ no preference” a run for the money.
I say go for it and cede the GOP to Trump and Cruz
“At least there would be one conservative alternative for the fall election”
yea sure and a Demoractic win.
And Lindsey Graham would get the same numbers he got in the primary, zero.
Good luck with that RINO’s.
The RINOs need to get over it! They’re acting like little children. It seems the polls and the caucuses have made their decision.
I find it laughable that the GOPe considers itself conservative.
Take it from the FBI, Hillary will not be candidate for president by the time the convention rolls around. Nor will she be able to accept a draft.
Clinton, or the GOP Candidate, will be President. Working, as this group is, to elect Clinton, who is 100% opposed to Conservative values, is not principal, it is petulance.
A "Fridge" group, is always at risk of carrying "weight" :)
Sorry Johnnie, couldn't resist
What would be the point of a third party run? Suppose half the voters are republican. Suppose 40% of them support the third party. How do you suppose 20% of the voters are going to win an election? They can’t win but they can certainly lose an election.
A Democrat win is assured already. The issue now is how many people go down with the Trump ship.
” ..meet over possible third party run against Trump”
Maybe they could meet also about running against Liberal Democrat Hillary Clinton? (Just saying, as their all assembled, the bosses that is)
Maverick McCain is probably sitting in the back speed dialing Hillarys VP line,
Are these folks too arrogant to realize just how far off the deep end they've descended? Or how totally evil they've become?
