AUSTIN, Texas (AP) President Barack Obama sided with law enforcement Friday in the debate pitting encryption and personal privacy against national security, arguing that authorities must be able to access data held on electronic devices because the "dangers are real."
Appearing at an annual tech festival in the Texas capital, Obama delivered his most extensive comments to date on an issue currently being played out in federal court. Apple, one of the world's largest technology companies, is challenging the government's request that it help the FBI access data on a cellphone that was used in the San Bernardino, California, attack that killed 14 people.
The issue has roiled the tech industry and divided Obama's advisers, but the president appeared to side Friday with law enforcement despite also saying the matter would not be settled by adopting an "absolutist view."
Obama restated his commitment to strong encryption but also raised the question of how would authorities catch child pornographers or disrupt terrorist plots if smartphones and other electronic devices are designed in ways that keep the data on them locked away forever.

he also mentioned it being used in IRS tax cases.
Who he?
Obama the guy with appointees who can’t take care of sensitive documents and information
trump is bright but not brilliant.
You have been living under one for over 7 years or haven't you noticed?
The primary reason the feds want this!!! They want Apple to not have hard encryption, so no company will have hard encryption.
All devices will be compromised. I side with Apple on this one. The feds don't want to stop terrorists, hell they're escorting them into our country and funding them, all at the same time they try to destroy patriots.
Our feckless leader, The Master of Disaster, the Ayatollah of All Crapola..
Said the grad without grades.
the guy that had every record since his birth sealed is claiming there are real dangers without full access to all everyone’s personal information?
that’s pretty funny.
and in typical libtard fashion... he cannot spot the irony
You know, no issue is truly fully-understood, until one hears the wit, wisdom and logic, of Barack Hussein Obama.
So he can’t scoop ice cream. So what ... he’s a genius.
Thank you Kenya and Indonesia for this gift that keeps on giving the whole year ‘round.
And thank you, liberals, DNC, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi. Only you could bring this light that shines down from somewhere.
I think you’re on to something there. They have nothing to gain by admitting they can break into any device. Much more to gain by making us believe we have a place to hide. Win Win by both Apple and the Feds. Apple continues to sell based on that point and the Federales can show some proof that they didn’t do anything illegal because they couldn’t. I hate being that cynical but there it is.
True, and they do a good job of it to the point where they require it under various laws. One example: http://netlib.com/compliance/ of many. Granted it's not in a phone used by stupid terrorists, but it probably has no back doors except where specified (e.g. device management interfaces)
See link in my previous post. Not likely to have unknown back doors, especially considering the wide variety of vendors that would have to be compromised or in collusion with the government.
The government is not doing this to pursue terrorists, the government is afraid somebody, somewhere, might be able to make a purchase or financial transaction without their knowledge or ability to take a cut
Those aren't the real dangers. There is hardly a single person in the 0b0z0 regime who could pass the same OSI background investigation for the TOP SECRET security clearance -- that I did.
And, for sure, that includes 0b0z0 himself -- and Hildabeast Clinton and her paramour, Humma whatzhername...
