Donald Trump has advanced to the brink of the Republican presidential nomination not by transforming the GOP electorate, but by dividing it along a new axis.
Though some conservative Trump critics have claimed that he has relied on a surge of non-Republican voters, the exit polls conducted so far in 15 states point toward the opposite conclusion. Overall, although turnout has soared from 2012, the share of the total primary votes cast by self-identified Republicans this year is virtually unchanged. And Trump has beaten his rivals among self-identified Republicans in every exit poll conducted in states that he has won.
Together these patterns suggest that Trump has built his coalition primarily from voters within the heart of the Republican electoratea dynamic that could make it more difficult for the party leaders to deny him the nomination if he finishes the primaries with the most delegates, but less than an absolute majority. It also suggests that his rise could signal a lasting shift in the partys balance of power toward the anti-establishment, heavily blue-collar voters who have provided the core of his support.

According to cruise, I’m just a stoopid Trump voter, so what would I know?
Derrrhhp! I don’ know any better. Cruz says I’m stupid! So I’m gonna have my helmet on when I play!
Felito Cruz is now out blaming Trump for the protesters tonight. Just keep it up Teddy til you completely kill your campaign. And it can’t happen too soon for me.
People aren’t voting for Trump because he’s a Republican. Or because he’s Conservative. They are voting for him because he understands what is important and has the best ideas and ability to make American great again.
The are also voting AGAINST the establishment, the elites, the GOP/Wall Street/K Street cabal, of which the Republican party is part and parcel.
Trump has stolen the GOP’s car right out from underneath them, used the media’s credit card to keep it fueled for free, and once he’s done using it to blast across the finish line, he’s going to light it on fire and p!ss on the ashes.
The most accurate summary that I have ever read - Thanks!!!
I have been working tirelessly on his campaign and this describes the sentiment of most people that I encounter, as well as myself, perfectly!
Yes Teddy is going to be a footnote after next Tuesday.

I must respectfully disagree.
Teddy will remain famous for some decades amongst political scientists. They will marvel at his campaign. They will wonder at the artistry of his fail and fall from grace.
yer wright. Teddi donnt lye. Aftur all, he be da Fasepalm of God.
Now I see why Lindsay Graham joked that if Cruz got whacked on the floor of the senate and the trial was held in the senate nobody could be convicted. :-)
And the sooner the better. :-)
This is what political scientist VO Key defined as a “critical election”.
Yep. I liked Cruz in the beginning. Then he started voting sideways. Trump who I liked better got in but I still also liked Cruz. Now I don’t know if I could stand to vote for the guy.
In comparison, the others are empty suit politicians. No substance other than full of crap.
