The following exchange took place during Thursdays Republican debate in Florida:
TAPPER: Senator Cruz, you were a supporter of the Pacific trade deal, but after taking some heat from conservatives, you changed your position. Why should these voters who dont like these trade deals trust that you will fight for them all the time and not just in election years?
CRUZ: Actually thats incorrect. There are two different agreements. Theres TPA and TPP. I opposed TPP and have always opposed TPP, which is what you asked about.
Senator Ted Cruzs statement that he always opposed TPP is incorrect. He and Representative Paul Ryan co-authored an April 21, 2015 op-ed in the Wall Street Journal (Putting Congress in Charge on Trade) in which they both supported fast-tracking TPP (the Trans Pacific Partnership). Cruz was also incorrect when he implied that TPA is separate from TPP. TPA (Trade Promotion Authority) was the fast-track bill that gave up Congresss right to amend or filibuster TPP and which reduced the number of votes required to pass TPP from two thirds of the Senate to a simple majority in each chamber.
Furthermore, Cruzs op-ed with Representative Paul Ryan was itself deceptive, as my co-authors and I noted at the time here in American Thinker: ...

Again, 30,000 page agreements have nothing to do with “free trade”. I made no statement about sovereignty, although the same people who push these phony so called “free trade” agreements also don’t like the idea of national sovereignty.
Lying Ted Cruz Canada dry
Thank you for your informative post. And the TPA doesn’t give the President carte blanche - it spells out what Congress will agree to AHEAD of time. I liken it to buying a car. The salesman already knows the lowest price he can sell it at, but of course they put on a song and dance and make you wait 20 minutes as they go “check with the manager”.
The trouble is, with obama, he is like not to follow the rules, and this congress is just as likely not to MAKE him follow the rules.
Like the Corker bill, which Cruz voted for. In the Corker bill there is an item saying that if obama didn’t give ALL the information for the Iran deal to congress for at least 30 days(?) to review, the deal was dead. Cruz knew obama wouldn’t comply, and he didn’t. When Cruz brought that up to congress after obama didn’t follow THE LAW, congress was “Meh” and allowed the deal to continue.
The guys on the right look a lot more honest than the guys on the left.
WOW - That Cardassian is a dead ringer for Cruz — my geek card maybe revoked but I forgot his character’s name on Deep Space 9.

How can we have free trade with a communist govt? For goodness sake.
Taqiyya.
Garak
More drawing from the liberal playbook - dehumanize your opponents so it is easier to attack them rather than focus on your candidate's proposals.
I really think that we, on this system, can drop the name calling and actually focus on issues.
Yep. Don’t expect Trump supporters to understand. They have their narrative. It’s like trying to reason with democrats... well hey wait a minute. :-)
A sellout vote.
Live Long and Prosper!
I don’t expect Cruzers to go all in for Trump. But you’d think they’d have seen through the fraud Ted by now.
Victory is life!
Breaking News?
Like Donald says, “Lying Ted”.
You just described Cruz supporters. Very cult like. See no wrong in their leader.
I support Trump for two reasons. Build the damned wall and Islam hates us.
There is an organization called CAIR. Council on American and Islamic Relations. Why the hell is there a religious group that wants to work on relations with a government? Why is there no Council on American and CHRISTIAN Relations? Or Council on American and Hindu or Jewish Relations. Trump sees that islam is at war with us. Nobody else even has the guts to say it.
Not surprising. Ted lies all the time.
Not only is the Trump camp lying...Cruz did indeed vote against TPA. It’s in the record. He also explained why he changed his mind and voted against TPA. Yet still they lie. That’s what Trump camp followers do these days. They have that in common with leftist Democrats.

So what is your objection to free trade agreements? (BTW, I absolutely demand national sovereignty.)
