The following exchange took place during Thursdays Republican debate in Florida:
TAPPER: Senator Cruz, you were a supporter of the Pacific trade deal, but after taking some heat from conservatives, you changed your position. Why should these voters who dont like these trade deals trust that you will fight for them all the time and not just in election years?
CRUZ: Actually thats incorrect. There are two different agreements. Theres TPA and TPP. I opposed TPP and have always opposed TPP, which is what you asked about.
Senator Ted Cruzs statement that he always opposed TPP is incorrect. He and Representative Paul Ryan co-authored an April 21, 2015 op-ed in the Wall Street Journal (Putting Congress in Charge on Trade) in which they both supported fast-tracking TPP (the Trans Pacific Partnership). Cruz was also incorrect when he implied that TPA is separate from TPP. TPA (Trade Promotion Authority) was the fast-track bill that gave up Congresss right to amend or filibuster TPP and which reduced the number of votes required to pass TPP from two thirds of the Senate to a simple majority in each chamber.
Furthermore, Cruzs op-ed with Representative Paul Ryan was itself deceptive, as my co-authors and I noted at the time here in American Thinker: ...

TPA gives up practically all Senate power to Obama so that Obama can pass obamatrade TPP all by himself
Informed people knew this. Ted may really believe the low-info bs. Now CRUZERS on FR don’t know anything because they haven’t bothered to actually read and research their guy/
Praise be!
Yeah, the real low information voters Ted’s counting on are the one’s who already support him and believe all his deceptions and triple talk about immigration and trade issues.

...NO, you are wrong, and he supported TPA because it extends for 6 years and will give the FAST TRACK to the next Republican President, as the last Repub Pres have had fast track, nothing new. And he does NOT support, and never has supported TPP which sells the US down the drain..
ymmv
Lying Ted.
That is all he knows how to do.
This article is duplicitous, deceptive, and deceiful. The Trumpettes that are swallowing and regurgitating this swill are saps of the highest order.
TPA is not and never was the same thing as TPP. Cruz is exactly right, and Trump and his paid slimers are intentional liars.
Definitely a façade cobbled together regarding Cruz as a true conservative. Either by him personally or by the GOPe. He has bamboozled many conservatives, including me for awhile. Seeing him in action in the campaign though began the opening of my eyes. Not the person I thought he was for a very long time.

I almost can’t believe it...the American Thinker woke up?
Have seen some pretty bad articles there recently but maybe the blatant lying was just too much.
When Cruz said in the debate that he didn’t support TPP and then launched into a speech mostly about something else and the moderator got away with it I was afraid most people wouldn’t notice.
Glad to see that some aren’t afraid to speak the truth about scheming and lying Cruz.
You're right. I've posted about this a number of times, but since the issue is too complex to fit in a tweet, or on a bumper stickers, people aren't willing to try to understand it.
We live in a kardashian world now.
He voted to give Obama fast track authority for the TPP.
And then he claimed he was against the TPP when he got heat from the TeaParty in Texas.
Economic freedom will never “knock down America”. It’s what made us the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the world.
I like Trump but he and these “deficit trader” types are wrong about trade.
The issue is government interference in the economy causing skyrocketing business costs forcing businesses to look elsewhere for more favorable economic environments. Again, the culprit isn’t China or Mexico, but the federal government.
The voluntary exchange in the market free from government interference is to be clearly distinguished from efforts to sabotage America’s political and constitutional sovereignty. The Left deliberately tries to confuse people about the difference between American political and constitutional sovereignty which MUST be defended and the free market economy which does not threaten our political sovereignty and brings economic growth, prosperity, and a high standard of living to the average American.
Why would a conservative even consider giving up the Senate's Constitutionally mandated duty to check the executive which TPA does? of course a real conservative wouldn't but Cruz is a fraud:
