Carl's Jr. HQ Moving From Calif. to Nashville; Press Avoids Saying Why
newsbusters ^ | 03/10/2016 | Tom Blumer

For years, Andrew F. Puzder, the CEO of CKE Restaurants, the parent company of the Carl's Jr. and Hardee's fast-food chains, has been telling the world that while the U.S. government makes life needlessly miserable for businesses, California, where it has been headquartered, is exponentially worse.

This week, CKE announced that it is moving its headquarters to Nashville, Tennessee. A story at the Orange County Register failed to go beyond the company's deliberately non-combative statement to explain why. As far as I can tell, the Los Angeles Times hasn't covered the move at all (I can't be absolutely sure because the paper's search engine is demonstrably horrible). Meanwhile, LA's CBS News affiliate appears to have intentionally omitted their reporter's attempt to cite "the unfavorable economic climate here in California" as a factor contributing to the move from its print coverage of the story.

In June 2013, Puzder told the Wall Street Journal that his chain would not expand in California because the state "is not interested in having businesses grow," noting among many other things that it takes 285 days to get a building permit after signing a lease. This means the chain has to pay rent for over nine months, plus the time needed to build, while not earning any revenues.

9.9% sales tax on everything.

IIRC, there's no state income tax in TN. They need to ding you, somewhere. :-)

I dunno, but I think that I'd rather pay 9.9% on everything I buy, than 7% on everything that I make.

Those double negatives always confuse me.

...

That’s because it’s a parenthetical response to a hypothetical question in a conversational style.

“Carls Jr is ok as far as fast food goes.

But nowhere close to In n Out”

True but for those on a tight budget Carls ALWAYS has active coupons where one of there bugers is on sale two for one. Since I have a Carls just 1/2 a mile a way, with a wait time less than half of In and Outs it is my go to Burger joint when Im not making a superior Burger at home on the BBQ.

All true. The coupon sheet that comes every week tempts me.

In n out lines are way too long.

I live in Florida where there is no state income tax and the sales tax in my county is 6%. I think it might be higher in some other counties.

My very first job was at Carl’s Jr on Beach Blvd in Buena Park, CA.

I'm sure I must have visited there, I used to live in Fullerton.

Two of the best things about SoCal - Carl's Jr and In-N-Out.

Could Jack In The Box (HQ in San Diego)-which is Carl’s other CA based rival-move its offices to Arizona or Texas?

Used to jokingly refer to Jack-in-the-Box as Gag-in-the-Bag, but they do have some decent burgers.

Carl’s Jr., F... You, I’m eating!

My last ex wife worked for a major semi truck manufacturer and the corporate attorney’s primary job was reviewing the use of their copyrighted products and how they were going to be presented in TV, Movies, and other forums and merchandise.

I don’t know how Carl’s Jr. allowed themselves to be used in that movie (Idiocracy).

Nashville has been a good corporate office location for many corporations.

Nissan moved their corporate headquarters to the Nashville area from Southern CA several years ago. Last year, Baretta moved here from CONN.

I bought a home in Tennessee so I can retire. I now live in Pennsylvania. Bought a 200K home - property taxes right around 500 per year. PA House appraisal is 78K with property taxes about 1800 per year.

No income tax.

Utilities run about 70% what they are in PA.

Gasoline about .50 per gallon less.

Food is less.

I don’t mind a high sales tax because I can avoid that by limiting my purchases. Can’t escape income/property taxes in PA though.

Plus the roads are nicer.

Here in WA State with no state income tax the sales tax tends to be around 8.8% in most places. Property tax around $2,000 on a $200,000 house.

Good analysis. Another thing that really p*$$e$ me off about Pennsylvania is the stupid local income tax in some areas including ours.

"Well, it is only 1% they say." Yeah, 1% of your gross on money you don't even see. And they get really p*$$y if you don't file even though they can clearly piggy back of the state returns and see you owe nothing or can even claim a small refund.

On top of that, we get the separate street light tax, a per capita tax and all the other stupid $#*+.

Congratulations on your planned move to Tennessee.

“Carl Karcher would be appalled.”

I think Carl Karcher would be appalled at how the libs in Sacramento have ruined the business climate in his beloved state.

I seriously doubt he’d have any objection to moving the company’s headquarters to a more business friendly state.

“Carls Jr is ok as far as fast food goes. But nowhere close to In n Out.”

That’s a matter of opinion. I much prefer Carl’s Jr to In n Out, and I’m a native Californian.

Native Californian here. I pulled my small business and my family out of metro Los Angeles ten years ago and relocated to North Texas. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
