For years, Andrew F. Puzder, the CEO of CKE Restaurants, the parent company of the Carl's Jr. and Hardee's fast-food chains, has been telling the world that while the U.S. government makes life needlessly miserable for businesses, California, where it has been headquartered, is exponentially worse.
This week, CKE announced that it is moving its headquarters to Nashville, Tennessee. A story at the Orange County Register failed to go beyond the company's deliberately non-combative statement to explain why. As far as I can tell, the Los Angeles Times hasn't covered the move at all (I can't be absolutely sure because the paper's search engine is demonstrably horrible). Meanwhile, LA's CBS News affiliate appears to have intentionally omitted their reporter's attempt to cite "the unfavorable economic climate here in California" as a factor contributing to the move from its print coverage of the story.
In June 2013, Puzder told the Wall Street Journal that his chain would not expand in California because the state "is not interested in having businesses grow," noting among many other things that it takes 285 days to get a building permit after signing a lease. This means the chain has to pay rent for over nine months, plus the time needed to build, while not earning any revenues.

"I'm the Secretary of State . . . brought to you by Carls, Jr."
It was a true California success story.
I wonder how long it will take for In and Out Hamburgers to do the same?
“Because it’s impossible to do business in California.”
No kidding!
“it takes 285 days to get a building permit after signing a lease”
My very first job was at Carl’s Jr on Beach Blvd in Buena Park, CA. Loved it. Life was much simpler then. Now I can barely afford to VISIT California.
“I wonder if the Peoples State of California will threaten an exit tax...”
Why not? If you try to leave the US and renounce your citizenship the IRS will come after you for all sorts of things even after you get your citizenship in another country. Why can’t a state do it too?
Couldn’t remember it exactly! lol
It’s intelligent moves like these that will keep Carl’s Jr. going for the next 500 years (see Idiocracy).
Anyone that has to work for a living will try to distance them selves from the lying taxing leftist liberal’s every time. But those fn left coast loonies can still vote-2-3 times!!!
Could Jack In The Box (HQ in San Diego)-which is Carl’s other CA based rival-move its offices to Arizona or Texas? Both are major markets for JBOX
What guy?
Why wouldn’t you patronize them? Most of their Stores are Franchises.
I know a guy who is a Principal in a group that owns at least ten Stores. They are always jumping through hoops trying to compete while keeping up with Government Mandates.
They also use E-Verify when Hiring which is not a requirement here, but it should be.
The Big One cannot hit too soon.
They are poorly represented in the DFW area with a shrinking footprint. Of course, DFW is a very competitive market for burgers. Krystal bailed completely and BK has also had problems.
Two reasons
They bought Hardee’s several years back gaining a dual region footprint, west coast and deep south.
Taxes
I'd buy AA or better rated CA municipal bonds
You might want to balance those with some Puerto Rico bonds, or perhaps some Greek issues.
Tennessee has no state income tax on wages. 9.9% sales tax is not such a bad trade-off if you are a wage earner there.
My little film company, Rockin’ the Wall Studios, pulled out of Sunset Blvd. last year. Too many taxes and too much regulation.
I don’t find her attractive at all, and no, I’m not gay.
