The National Film Board of Canada, the country's public filmmaker, has promised half the movies it finances will be directed by women.
Those urging Hollywood to close the pay and opportunity gap for women directors should cast an envious eye to Canada.
The National Film Board of Canada, the country's government-funded film producer, on Tuesday announced it will ensure at least half of its productions will be directed by women, and half of all production financing will go towards helping women tell their own stories.

When a government gets involved in regulating films, look for them to be just as screwed up as an economy when a government gets involved in regulating business.
Governments typically screw up everything they touch.
Before anyone gets excited....consider this.
There is not exactly a big huge budget sitting at the NFB-Canada. They have a total budget of 60 million Canadian dollars or 44 million US dollars.
In the US....that would basically pay for three comedies with Kevin Hart....so you can do the math.
If you were going to do some movie and it was supposed to be some artsy movie with zero chance of making the money back, and had a total budget of 6-million Canadian dollars, then hire up the gal to direct and go forward. My guess is that they are pretty strict on cash funding, and you have to walk in with half the budget in your hand, and hope for a kind donation of 2 or 3 million of their precious state money to make some movie about drunk women from Tickle Cove who fall in love with a visiting Mexican named Juan....all directed by some gal named Valarie.
Surely they will also bankroll other industries like heavy construction, oilfield work, and other dangerous jobs.

Canada has long subsidized Canadian art and popular culture as an attempt to avoid Canadian cultural identity being swallowed up by its southern neighbor. This isn’t much different. They probably subsidize French-speaking movie makers as well.
It’s a good way to pad out the producer’s daughter’s/wife’s resume while the male assistant director does all the work.
If you just wanted an extra million or two...to make some lousy movie about lesbians living in Dildo, Newfoundland (there is such a place), who bake marijuana cookies and rob banks, with no real possibility of it ever making money back....then by all means...hook up your wife to produce and fake the idiots out. They probably are that stupid to let you make a bad movie with a fake female producer.
From the accents I assume just about every male-bashing movie on the Lifetime network is shot in Canada. Don’t those count?
“Canadian culture” is an oxymoron.
Governments love to fund oxymorons.
I didnt know they made movies in Canada.
Because everybody knows women are shy when it comes to talking about their problems.
A LOT of movies are made in Canada. In Vancouver. By Hollywood film companies.
If you are watching a movie set in the U.S., but the supporting cast is starting to annoy you by saying “oot” and “eh?” every few minutes, it was shot in Canada.
