Before anyone gets excited....consider this.
There is not exactly a big huge budget sitting at the NFB-Canada. They have a total budget of 60 million Canadian dollars or 44 million US dollars.
In the US....that would basically pay for three comedies with Kevin Hart....so you can do the math.
If you were going to do some movie and it was supposed to be some artsy movie with zero chance of making the money back, and had a total budget of 6-million Canadian dollars, then hire up the gal to direct and go forward. My guess is that they are pretty strict on cash funding, and you have to walk in with half the budget in your hand, and hope for a kind donation of 2 or 3 million of their precious state money to make some movie about drunk women from Tickle Cove who fall in love with a visiting Mexican named Juan....all directed by some gal named Valarie.
It’s a good way to pad out the producer’s daughter’s/wife’s resume while the male assistant director does all the work.
