An Army deserter who pretended for years to be a Special Ops sergeant and Purple Heart recipient was sentenced Monday to a year and a day in federal prison.
Simon Emilio Zablah, a 29-year-old resident of Broward County, Florida, pleaded guilty in November to two charges of impersonating a federal officer and one count of credit card fraud.
Despite going AWOL from the Army within two weeks of enlisting in January 2005 and later being discharged on other than honorable conditions for years Zablah identified himself as a federal agent with the Drug Enforcement Agency, as well as a member of the U.S. Department of Defenses Special Ops forces and a recipient of the prestigious Purple Heart award.

From Wiki: A year and a day is a minimum incarceration sentence for felonies in many jurisdictions, and is one of the main features distinguishing felonies from misdemeanors. For some crimes, this is the minimum penalty, as traditionally in English-speaking, common law countries, misdemeanors may not entail a sentence of more than a year (hence, "eleven months and twenty-nine days") whereas felonies are traditionally punished by incarceration of over one year, hence "a year and a day." Furthermore, in many jurisdictions, prisoners are eligible for parole only if their sentences are longer than a year; by imposing a sentence of a year and a day, judges can offer defendants a chance at parole.[citation needed] In the United States federal system, only sentences of more than one year allow prisoners to obtain early release for good time while incarcerated. As a result, a sentence of a year and a day can lead to less time served than a sentence of a year.
I’m no fan of light sentencing especially in a case like this but the 366 days w/mental health treatment may be appropriate, he has to be a nut.
Seems like a reaction to crushing shame over having to go AWOL for whatever reason. So his solution was to turn himself into a hero.
10/10 he's a liberal.
I immediately thought of “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” and McMurphy - if he wasn’t looney going in he surely would be on the other end!
I have a POS brother-in-law who served in the Army Reserve during the Vietnam War attached to 104th Infantry Division and his 2 week annual duty was as a drill instructor.
After my dad died, he stole my dad’s bronze star and today he claims that he was awarded a bronze star for action on some super secret 2 week combat mission in Vietnam.
Get testimonies that he’s defrauding the Bronze Star, and turn him in.
...he has to be a nut
(((
Maybe just evil.
That sure is a possibility, hard to know what’s going through these peoples brains.
