HOUSTON (KTRK) -- METRO is getting pressure from veterans and a Houston congresswoman to act quickly on allowing disabled vets to drive the transit agency's high occupancy transit lanes for free, which most other Texas toll authorities offer.
Surrounded by veterans Tuesday, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Houston, said she was baffled why the transit agency could not implement what she described as a "simple request."
"A constituent called and said they wanted to be able to access the HOT lanes for free, without cost during off-peak hours," Jackson Lee said. "I really thought it was a simple request. I did not think it was a challenging request, but yet over a period of months, we were not able to secure that permission from the local METRO board."
Ted Oberg Investigates reported last week on METRO's board members decision to refuse disabled vets free tolls on the agency's HOT lanes.
The agency said it needed more information despite being aware of it for two years.

But of course Jackson Lee is seeking re-election in 2016.
So basically able bodied vets can be disabled an never been in a combat zone.
I would limit it to Purple Heart recipients.
Its a terrible idea. Who is next? One legged, redheaded homosexuals? Why do politicians get to decide who gets preferential treatment on the roads that tax payers pay for?Get rid of the, pay to get to work on time scheme.

Then spend the rest of their time ignoring, at best, the very veterans they use to get their worthless hides reelected.
If the dems really cared for our veterans the VA would actually be of some worth.
Why not build special GAY lanes?

Well this was supposedly the bailiwick of conservative, pro-defense folks. The Democrats eat the crumbs from your carelessly dropped lunches.
I’ve met more than a few WW2 vets over the years at my American Legion who suffered hearing loss from being in the Navy.
Hearing protection was “put your hands over your ears”.
(well Python Lee Jackson that is).
It’s a bad idea. And as a vet, I’ll tell you why. I know two “disabled” vets. Both were retired officers. One hurt his knee playing basketball. The other found out he had sleep apnea when he retired. Therefore, they are both classified as “disabled vets”, with all the benefits that go along with it.
Taking a deep breath here, and waiting for the outrage, but IMHO, a considerable amount of the whole “disabled vet” thing is a scam. LIke people on disability. For someone legitimately seriously and permanently injured in defense of their country, absolutely. We should provide everything we possibly can to help these folks. But you’d be surprised how many perfectly able-bodied disabled vets there are out there.

TO GET DRIVE SHARING, so less cars on the road there are called HIGH OCCUPANCY.
Anybody have a list of the myriad of exceptions to this that are now in place?
I recall being in Los Angeles when idiots there let the hybrid cars like Prius use the HO lane. What happened? So many hybrids used the HO lane that it was slower than the regular lanes. Ironically, the High Occupancy was in # of cars, not high occupancy in the cars which was the intentions in building them.
This does not mean I hate disabled vets or anyone else that uses these lanes.
They can be called the Hershey Highway?
