Only a year ago, Republicans were congratulating themselves on having the strongest field of presidential candidates in a generation — diverse, highly credentialed conservatives who might be the salvation of a party that had lost the popular vote in five of the past six elections.
But now, the question is how close the Grand Old Party will come to annihilating itself and what it stands for.

Trump had nothing to do with splintering the Grand Old Party other than to partake of favors on the left and on the right. Once upon a time,the RNC brought together a brain trust of GOPe party elders to figure out what had gone wrong. Obama had just throttled Romney, the party lost ground in the Senate, and voters just weren/t into the Old Christian White Man demographic.
So the Big Tent of gays, abortionists, secularists, feminists, was resurrected.....and conservatives were herded onto an ice floe set adrift in the Arctic Ocean.
