But Hillary Clinton, who is well ahead in the Democratic race for the presidency, would likely face a stronger challenge should Florida Sen. Marco Rubio or Texas Sen. Ted Cruz capture the Republican nomination for president.
In the scenario that appears most likely to emerge from the primary contests, Clinton tops Trump 52% to 44% among registered voters. That result has tilted in Clinton's favor since the last CNN/ORC Poll on the match-up in January.
But when the former secretary of state faces off with either of the other two top Republicans, things are much tighter and roughly the same as they were in January. Clinton trails against Rubio, with 50% choosing the Florida senator compared to 47% for Clinton, identical to the results in January. Against Cruz, Clinton holds 48% to his 49%, a slight tightening from a 3-point race in January to a 1-point match-up now.

Well, I don’t know. Breaking down the stats of the states that have actually voted so far, he’s receiving support from a broad range of voters covering nearly every demographic group, including some that normally vote democrat. If Trump wins the nomination, I think the democrats will be in big trouble.
You mean except for all those people in OH and FL in polls who have him winning the 2 key states both Mittens nod McLame lost? Right now he would win the EC.
Here in the central valley of California we are far from DC and times are tough. Many homeless and out of work. They realistically see that the last 8 years have been a total disaster. They want something different and Donald is it. We don't necessarily like the way he conducts himself, but change is what we need.
In the Spring of 1980 the polls had Reagen losing to Carter by 30 points.

Hillary would have to be indicted for a Trump vs. Hillary race to even begin to approach the Carter vs. Reagan race and Carter’s Iranian hostage crisis difficulty. Comparing poll numbers in those two races is nonsense.

In such a situation, I hope you are correct.
I am pretty pessimistic, however.
Cruz was right last night about bad the MSM would attack Trump over his then-on-going fraud trial. It would be really effective -— and, sadly, there is at least a kernel of truth there (something they don’t normally have).
Moreover, I’ve never seen an election where there are elected officials (on both sides, interestingly) saying they won’t support the candidate.
The soundbites of Rubio from last night (and Cruz and basically every commentator) saying Trump is not honest would destroy Trump — from the right.

She will be indicted. Joe Biden will be the nominee.
She will bow out on promise of post-election pardon by Obama.
That’s possible.
And Biden would be a stronger candidate IMHO.

I’m afraid the electorate as a whole has shifted left and I don’t see it getting better. Half of Americans don’t pay taxes at this point. Any bets they vote conservative?
We’re likely to end up with an extreme left Democratic Party and at best a slightly left Republican Party. One could argue that we’re already there and it started with Dubya. I think this is what’s fueling Trump.

UNTIL EITHER OF THEM ARE NOMINATED.
McCain was, BY FAR, the strongest GOP candidate in 2008. The man that had a history of “reaching across the aisle”. The man that was willing to fight against the ‘extreme elements’ in the Republican Party.
The man who was LOVED by the media.
Then he became our candidate and the ONLY THING the media mentioned about him was how he cheated on his wife while she was on her deathbed...and the rest was history.
They STILL think we’re stupid...
Try as they will, with overt dis-information and propaganda, Mr. Trump will easily defeat these Commie scumbags, notwithstanding digital election tampering and other commie tactics.

Sigh. I know you know this: the Drive Bys will try to destroy ANY . . . ANY . . . GOP candidate and Cruz would be a blessing to them. (Wait til they roll on national news 24-7 Rafael Cruz’s statement that his son is a “king ordained to reign over America.”
No, Teddy would be crushed. Only Trump so far has shown he can withstand this stuff. I would not say Cruz has gotten a free pass, but he has had GOPe rags like National Review praising him-—that absolutely will NOT happen if by some chance he became the nominee. You’d see the Mittens-led GOPe media launch into Cruz like they were the Dem party.
The angrier a candidate makes the liberals, that’s a good thing. They reserve their hate for the most conservative.
Cruz is a much bigger change than Trump.
I understand if someone is totally uninformed about politics that they, in the most simplistic analysis possible, might think a “non-politician” is more change than any current politician. But anyone who knows Cruz’ record of drastically opposing Obama and Trump’s record of “evolving” from many liberal positions and even supporting some current ones like Obama’s Cuba policy knows better.
