Democrat Hillary Clinton gets it. Say what you will about her less flattering qualities, there is no doubt that she understands how deeply a skewed economy has taken a toll on the very people who power the United States.
There is also no doubt that her likely opponent, Donald Trump, looks at the economy from the top down, through a lens that foregrounds corporate giants like Caterpillar and puts real people in the background.

Trump peddles the fiction that choking immigration, slashing taxes — especially for the wealthiest — and hitting multinational companies and other nations with debilitating tariffs will bring back manufacturing jobs and grow incomes.

Clinton’s agenda is harder to distill into angry sloganeering.
She would target tax cuts at job creators and families — including $2,500 per student to help with college costs.
Trump? Nope.
She would give small businesses access to capital and tax relief while slashing bureaucracy.
Trump? Nope.
She would invest in the kind of scientific research that throughout American history has seeded new industries.
Trump? Nope.
She would offer a 15% tax credit to companies that engage in profit-sharing with their workers.
Trump? Nope.
She would give low-income Americans a chance to get a foothold by raising the federal minimum wage to $12 an hour.
Trump? Nope.
She would reform the capital gains tax in an effort to reward longer-term investment.
Trump? Nope.
