Come on, Larry, you're smarter than this. This isn't up to the standards of one of your undergraduates. It does hit all the high points, however - this should be embarrassing - demagoguery, KKK, McCarthyism, isolationism, Man On The White Horse, etc ad nauseum. Trump is the greatest extant threat to American government since the planet cooled. Even the threat of Trump is a threat. Son, you hyperventilate any more than that and we're going to have to have you breathing into a paper bag.

Trump certainly has a brash style but he does not appear to be the authoritarian this purple-prosed article promises. In fact, he is, by extensive self-description, a dealer, which is one thing that most alarms the conservatives here on FR. He says A but he'll settle for B. That's what a businessman does, within a certain set of limits. He's written books on it. This isn't hard to understand.

And so we are actually pretty unlikely to see anything mentioned in this piece that is currently dripping little pools of dread to the virtual floor. No brown-shirted hordes taking over DC, no white-robed Klansmen rolling back the tide of social justice for the chronically oppressed (who also happen to be affluent, noisy, and privileged themselves). Some academics may be called names by the people they've been calling names over the last eight years. Some authority may be challenged. Certain government excesses may be curtailed. Larry, that isn't a threat to what you've been misnaming "democracy", it IS democracy. It isn't going to be a steady drumbeat of victories for the progressives on a march to an imaginary Utopia. That was always a ridiculous fantasy, and what is about to happen is a dose of reality. Deal with it.

We the people have Trump and Trump only.

Of, give us all a break from the jackassery, please. Watching what this buffoon is doing to the country is heartbreaking, and this is only a campaign. Just wait until the jackass is elected (God forbid). I am reminded of the old saying; "Be careful what you wish for."

I second that. The United States is a Republic, not a Democracy.

Can you show me one example of that being true in the last forty years?

The Left sounds worried about Trump.

Some here say that the large primary turnouts are Dems voting for Trump because they think he will be easiest to defeat in November. My response is: it’s more likely they would vote for Cruz or Rubio, rather than the guy they seem most worried about.

Cruz is definitely better than Trump.

Trump is a blue liberal elitist.

Larry Summers, the author, is a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat liberal. He famously was fired as Harvard’s president for PC violations, for implying women were not generally speaking as capable as men in math and science.

“It started out as a republic, yes. But I would argue that since the USSC gave the Commerce Clause blanket powers, we have been living in a nation-state. Rather in than a compartmented dirigible, we float aloft in a blimp.”

Ain’t that the truth. The CC has become all encompassing instead of restrictive.

Larry Summers has done enormous harm to USA. I don’t believe a word he says. One of the better non-political documentaries to come out of Hollywood “Inside Job” vilified him and many of his compadres for their self serving actions.
