Lisa in Waukesha, Wisconsin, has two Facebook accounts. One reflects her liberal politics; the other is for acquaintances and family members to whom Lisa shows only her cat photos. Christina, in Milford, Massachusetts, has a sign in the back window of her car proclaiming support for a Democratic candidate. But as soon as she parks in the company lot, she puts it facedown on the backseat. Byron has lived in the same small town of Pomeroy, Iowapopulation 662his entire life. He brings his partner to family dinners but has never actually said to his conservative sister that hes gay.
Lisa, Christina, and Byron are blues in red statesliberals who live in conservative communities that exist in every state, Republican or Democratic-leaning, across America. They and people like them are constantly reminded they arent quite like everyone else: from the churches they do or dont attend, to their purchases and media preferences, to their loyalties at the ballot box. On a daily basis, liberals who have made homes, formed friendships, and participated in the civic life of conservative towns and cities are confronted with unsettling reminders that theyre different, and theyve found myriad ways to take that truth in stride.

Typical Solon, from the article: “Byron doesnt like to stir up any controversy in his bar but found he had to say something as regulars muttered racial slurs.”
Literally ALL the racial slurs I hear are from LIBERALS. Whether from pastie white guys, native Americans, latinos or blacks, in my experience, it has always been a liberal who spews that venom.
His sex partner?
His business partner?
Salon has to use euphemisms because what they are selling STILL doesn't fly with conventional society.
The liberal mantra is ‘politicize everything’. It was true in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s...
Attack the patriarchy, the institutions of marriage, organized religion, the history of this country...
and it is all over the media every day. I opted out of the media in 2008 when my tv died. I no longer have to endure tv ads and talk/guest/characters that spit on my politics every day.
And now there are ‘highlights’ from NBC on gas pumps when I fill up. “You will be assimilated!” “Gooble gobble, one of us!”
I have similar neighbors. They’re really whack jobs.
Were I of the same caliber I’d report them for property tax fraud. They claim homestead exemption in the name of the owner who doesn’t live there.. That’s illegal here in GA.
Big deal. In Oregon if you put a Republican bumper sticker on your car, your vehicle gets the tires slashed or it gets keyed.
So dont give me the BS whine that conservatives persecute leftists.
I was just getting ready to post this, but wanted to scroll down to see if anyone else would mention it. In my case, it’s Washington state, but the sentiment is the same. Liberal bumperstickers all over the place. Very, very few Conservative. I know they’re up here because I know a few myself. We’re just smart and understand the value of our property enough to not put it at risk by using it to announce our political preferences. Damn shame, too. The types of people who’d vandalize your car for having a conservative sticker are the very same who howl about their free speech rights getting trampled on.
“The issue is never the issue. The issue is the revolution.”
—David Horowitz, quoting unnamed SDS leader
And progressives wonder why normal people consider them to be two faced liers.
Blue in a red state? The writer ought to try being a conservative black in a blue state. Or anywhere. Talk about a minority!
Spot on.
So, how do people who are not blue do in blue states?
Just today there is a news item from liberal dominated Anaheim California. A small group was planning a peaceful, legal demonstration, when they were savagely attacked by a leftist lynch mob that charged them while they were unloading their car.
The mob started by throwing things and clubbing them with sections of 2x4 and other weapons, then knocked down and brutally stomped one of them. Another pulled a knife to defend himself, and stabbed three of the attackers before they backed off. He has been arrested. Another used a flagpole to fend them off. Others fled the scene before they could be injured or killed by the mob.
The punchline? The peaceful protesters were KKK.
Proper reply to such an asinine meddler is: “MIND YOUR OWN DAM BIDNESS!!”
His butt partner. His schlong partner. His limp-wrist, light-loafer, pud-gumming, colon-spelunking partner.
In America, you can leave if you are uncomfortable. It’s your choice.
Very true.
Salon is saluting duplicity. If it were not for double standards, the Left would not have any standards.
And why do they live in conservative areas?
Because they love to be humiliated.
No because they are tolerated, for the dumb masses they are
In my experience, this clown has it mostly backwards.
I’ve got relatives who are head-up-the-anal-cavity liberal (great people otherwise) in a our totally blue state who won’t bring up politics around me because they know they’ll get pushback.
And I once spent a year in Manhattan; ate lunch most days with a group of maybe 6 to 8 youngsters (20-somethings) who were all uniformly libs (if relatively naive) and we talked politics every chance we got - apparently they’re comfortable when the odds are at least 6 to 1, even if they’re taking incoming. Never saw people more flabbergasted then when they saw the presidential election results in 1984. Apparently I was the only one they knew who voted Reagan.
Now none of those kids had any power over me. Had that been the case, I mostly would’ve kept my mouth shut - in my experience, there are no more vindictive little pr*cks than libs who’ve been challenged in their beliefs.
I’m not gay, butt my boyfriend is.
This is insane.
She must be living or working in a rare red town in a blue state which Massachusetts is a blue state. More likely the team will show up because of a “Trump” or “Hillary for prison 2016” bumper sticker then a Blarney Sanders, Elisabeth Warren or some other dem sticker.
